HP ProBook 440 G5 Notebook PC
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have an HP 6980 wirelessly connected to four other laptops  -   3 are various models of HP, one is a Lenovo which my company makes me use; two HPs were upgraded from  Win 8 to Win 10, the other two came with Win 10 installed.  These four laptops have the correct native driver for the HP 6980 - with all functionality for that printer, meaning I can set which tray to default, duplex print, etc.  I might add that all of these laptops had the printer driver installed before the latest  Windows Creator update, and I haven't had any problems

And  then along comes the Probook (which is actually running Win10 Pro) which I just got and am just starting to get set up to use.  It finally found the printer using the 'Find with IP address' option, but there apparently isn't an HP driver available anymore.

Is there a driver that will work?  I really need to be able to use the duplex and printer-tray selection functionality.

Please don't suggest that I just pitch the printer and get a new one.  It obviously works with Windows 10 if it has the right driver.   Is it possible to copy the driver from one of the machines where it works, to this new machine?

Hi,

Thanks for using the HP Forums.

The drivers are in Win 10:

Win 10 In-OS drivers

Yes, the DJ6980 driver is available in Win 10 IN-OS drivers.

Follow these steps

  1. Right-click on the Start button (Windows icon)  select Settings. Type in "Control Panel" in the Search and select Control Panel.

  1. Under "Control Panel", select "View devices and printers"

  1. Select "Add a printer"

  1. If it finds your printer (assume you have your printer plug in via USB on your computer), follow the steps to install the In-OS drivers.  Else, select "The printer that I want isn't listed" > Next

  1. In the next screen, select "Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings"  > Next

  1. Select "Use an existing port:" > Next

  1. Select HP > Click on "Windows Update" as it would bring up the HP Deskjet 6980 Printer (HP) option.  Note that the "Windows Update" may take up to 10 minutes depending on how fast your broadband speed is"

Add a printer 4.jpg

Add a printer 5a Deskjet 6980.jpg

  1.  Click "Next" and follow the remaining steps to install your printer driver.

Hope that helps!

I had the same problem with you. Bellow i describe the problem, what i try and finaly the solution that works for me.

Installation of  HP DeskJet 6980 IS IMPOSSIBLE in Windows 10 installation(after formation).

By upgrading to Win10 you don't face any problem since drivers are present.
Installation of  HP DeskJet 6980 IS POSSIBLE in Windows 7 installation(after formation),
the all process was done automatically.

Installation by  TCP/IP isn't possible since drivers are not loaded.
Drivers are not included In HP support page for win7 - win10.
HP support page includes only installation directions, assuming that windows 7-10 system have the necessary drivers.
Unfortunely windows 10 does not install them automatically and does not include this HP product.

HPPSdr Print and Scan Doctor for Windows, windows 10 installed troubleshooter even Microsoft printing troubleshooter were not able to solve the problem.

Notice that network printer was visible in private network.
I turned off windows Defender and windows Firewall but the problem wasn't solved.

Semisolution
In TCP/IP procedure i chose another HP deskjet model after that i was able to print pages.
But in printing prefences i couldn't use all functionalities of my  product.

Solution
In a win7 pc, were product was installed, choose share the printer.
In win10 pc install Shared printer. Win10 pc loads appropriate drivers from Win7 pc.
In win10 pc install the printer directly(not by share). Now installation is possible since drivers are loaded.
Remove Shared printer from Win10 pc and Win7 pc.
