I tried 6 times now to reinstall my printer, I keep getting the message once its loaded - before "install"
''AN INSTALL OPERATION TOOK TOO LONG TO EXECUTE. THIS IS A FATAL ERROR PREVENTING PRODUCT USE. PLEASE RESTART YOUR COMPUTER, AND RUN THIS INSTALLER AGAIN. IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, PLEASE CHECK THE PRODUCT SUPPORT WEBSITE FOR YOUR PRODUCT."
I read all the responses to the OP's post and none of them looked like they would fixed the problem for my client without serious trial and error.
The client sold his business and kept two PC's and the HP LaserJet Pro 401n printer and set them up at his home. He called me when he could not print to the printer from his main application PC after he had connected the printer to it via the USB cable. The HP Pro M401n was connected via USB to a PC and shared to the network at his old business. That PC was not one that the client kept when he sold the business and the application PC he kept did not print to the shared M401n.
The Client does not have the installation media that came with the 401n. I guided the client through the steps to access support.hp.com and download the installation package:HP LaserJet Pro 400 M401a, M401d, M401n, M401dn, N404dw Printer Full Software and Drivers ver 15.0.15190.1271 82.6 MB to his PC.
When he ran the installation in the download and followed the instructions to connect the USB and click next, the installation continued and seemed to be taking a long time. While we waited, I searched with Google and found the OP's post and responses. After about 20 minutes the client's installation failed with the same "TOOK TOO LONG TO EXECUTE" message. As stated, I reviewed the responses to the OP's thread but had decided that none of them offered a viable way to fix the issue.
I'm posting what worked for the client so that someone with the same issue (there are 20 I have the same issue associated with the OP's closed thread) will be able to solve their issue.
1) download and install Revo Uninstaller (free) and scan the system looking for any HP printer related installs/files. In the client's case there were no HP printer installed on his PC but there was a networked Brother Laser that the application server PC used to print to at the sold business. I had the client use Revo to remove all traces of the Brother printer (Revo runs the Brother uninstall file then offers to scan for folders and registry keys not removed by the by the Brother uninstall script).
2) Disconnect and discard the USB cable and connect the M401n with a CAT-5 cable to his wired Internet gateway.
3) Execute ipconfig /all on the PC to find his DHCP assigned IPv4 address and the router's gateway IP address. I know that the internet router DHCP range was moved to start at 100 as I set up the client's old business network.
4) run set the IP address of the printer via the control panel to "Manual" and set IPv4 to 192.168.1.10, netmask 255.255.255.0 with gateway 192.168.1.1
5) Run the HP download install again selecting LAN IP 192.168.1.10. This took less then five minutes to complete and the client was able to print from his PC to the printer.
I'm posting this as a service to the HP community forum. Too many OP's fail to come back and tell the forum what fixed their problem.
