Printer Driver

I'm a dinasaur on computers. My printer is saying the driver is unavailable yet it is installed. Can anybody help using idiots language ?

Here's the rest...

The "Software Unavailable" error might show up when the printer software is "sort of" installed but something went wrong with the uninstall part of the procedure, the connection type, or perhaps the system keeping track of the printer while the connection to the software is finalized.

Before you can install a new copy of the printer software,

Check and make sure all the "old" printer software has been removed from its hiding places.

What?  Sometimes pieces of the software get stuck during the normal "uninstall" procedure.

The hope is that any little left over pieces can all be found and extracted (removed) so the new software will install.

Read and, as best you can, try the following.

To make it simpler, ignore the parts you don't understand.

True, you might miss something -- also true, throwing up hands won't work either.

Basic Instructions - Install the Full Feature Software / Full Driver printer software

Preparation

If the printer software is still / already installed, 

Uninstall the printer software  from Control Panel > icon view > Programs and Features

Restart the computer and log in

( Reference Uninstall HP printer software and drivers )

NOTE:  If the printer also installs Help files – Select and Uninstall the printer help file package from Programs and Features when you are uninstalling the main printer software.

What if?  If software will not uninstall, appears to be removed and is “still hanging around” after you uninstall / Restart...

Microsoft:  Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed

OR

Revo Uninstaller (Free version)

then

Restart the computer and sign in

Next,

After the printer software is uninstalled, check that the printer is not still lurking.

Windows 10

Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

If the printer is listed, Right-Click on the printer "Remove device" > Restart the computer and sign in.

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Select Printer > Remove (upper right)

OR

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Devices > (Scroll down) More devices and printer settings

If the printer is listed, Right-Click on the printer "Remove device" > Restart the computer and sign in.

• If using VPN, shut it off to install software.  NOTE >> If you don’t know what this is, you are not using a VPN – ignore this part.

• Reminder:  If using USB cable between printer and computer, disconnect the cable before installing software.  Later... Connect the cable when instructed (near the end of the installation procedure).

• Observation:  It is possible (assuming your Wireless Network is stable) that using a Wireless connection to install the printer software might work better than using an Ethernet Connection.   Personal choice - the Wireless connection method is recommended when you face insurmountable issues installing the software.

Installation

• Download and Save the Full Feature Software Web Pack installation package or the Easy Start Software
• Open File Explorer
• Navigate to the folder in which you saved the installation file  (likely Downloads)
• Right-Click on the installation package and “Run as Administrator”
• If using a USB printer cable to connect the printer to the computer, connect the cable when instructed to do so, near the end of the installation procedure
• After the software is installed, Restart the computer and log in

• Skip any extra software / offers you do not want – Wording varies as does the number of times you have to “skip” or opt-out of various options.
• When asked, opt for "Full Software and Drivers" (exact wording might vary).

• If, after the Full Software and Drivers option is selected, the installation terminates (suddenly stops and disappears – never comes back): Open your Downloads folder > Look for and Right-Click on the full Web installation package and “Run as Administrator”

Preparation > Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers and scanners

Scroll down > Switch OFF Let Windows manage my default printer

Scroll up > Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Set as Default

Windows 10

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select (Left-Click) your printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

I haven't written to turn on the printer yet, so it's off.

Uninstall the old driver in Control Panel, in "Programs and Features", then remove

all occurrences in "Program" and "X86 Program", in Control Panel, right click on your old printer (If it is still there, chances are that it is no longer there) "Remove", if it is present.

Restart the PC. At the end of the startup, connect the printer to the mains, connect a USB cord on the PC side, on the printer you will connect it during the installation ONLY when asked.

Start installing your printer, by right-clicking on the Setup. EXE of the downloaded driver, click ''installed'' en

as administrator'', let the installation take place, at the end, restart the PC.

To create a shortcut on the Windows desktop, open Control Panel, right-click on your

new printer, create shortcut, on the desktop, yes.

A new shortcut has been created on the Windows desktop.

Turn on your printer, print a test page, by clicking on the new shortcut created.

That's it, your printer is working again.

with this method, my printer has been working for 7 years without problems.
