HP Deskjet 1515
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

After clean upgrading my MacBook Air (2018) to Big Sur from Catalina, it stops recognizing my HP Deskjet 1515 (USB).

I have tried running HP Easy Start, which after running it informing me there is a better software (HP Smart) downloadable from Apple Store.  That I did and ran it. It simply could not recognize the printer which is connected directly to the laptop.

I have changed the printer cable thinking it might be cause by it but nothing. Likewise checked it with another MBA on Catalina and it recognized it fine.

Appreciate it very much if someone can help me resolve this issue please. Many thanks in advance.

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand that your Macbook is not recognizing your printer.

Are you getting any error messages?

@Sandytechy20:

Thank you for dropping by.

I hope you don't mind if I provide more than just the error messages that you asked. This issue is also raised in another forum (https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Printer-Setup-Software-Drivers/You-do-not-have-permission-to-open-the-...), which I also participated. I hope though you would give it a shot as it is still unresolved for some, including me.

The error message is "You do not have permission to open the application “HP Scanner 3”". The scanner (Image Capture or any other scanning app) also give that error message. I used HP Uninstall to remove all HP printers and setting. Using HP Smart for Desktop, I reinstall the printer (HP Deskjet 1515 with USB connection). Thereafter, HP Smart and HP Easy Scan would still show the same error message. HP Smart would indicate that the printer is "Ready". But upon clicking on Printer Information, it states that the printer is not installed. However, from System Preferences, under Printers & Scanners, the printer is actually set up.

As suggested in the other forum, I changed the Sharing & Permissions for the file /Library/Image Capture/Device/HP Scanner 3 to Read & Write for system, user and everyone. But the same error message would result.

Thank you for your attention. Hope it can be resolved.

I copied here steps described by @Rigatoni in the other forum.

It solved the problem with my MBA accessing the HP DeskJet 1515.

It help solve the problems faced by many other members.

For some reasons, in my case at least, manually changing the Sharing & Permission of the file did not help solve the problem. The command/s have to be run using Terminal.

Thank you to @Rigatoni for making the suggestion.

I've had the same problem after updating from 11.3 to 11.5.1 and found a solution:

- Navigate to /Library/Image Capture/Devices

- Copy "HP Scanner 3" to your Desktop and alter the permissions for everyone and staff to "Read & Write".

- Delete the Original "HP Scanner 3" Plugin from Devices Folder

- Copy the "HP Scanner 3" with custom permission to Devices Folder

- Reopen Image Capture App

- Scanning should work now

Thanks @der_be for sharing the solution here. I see some users have resolved the problem using your solution.

I got some advice from @StretchMusic for this issue. Scanner 3 is an old outdated software. We suggest to uninstall it using HP Uninstaller and then install HP Smart or HP Easy Scan. Hope this works. Please let us know. Thanks everyone!

Chao

When I ran HP Uninstaller, it didn't touch "HP Scanner 3.app" or "HPScanner.app". Deleting those apps just resulted in a "The file can't be found" error like @Mdelvecchio had. And my printer's not supported by HP Smart and HP Easy Scan.

After trying @der_be's solution, I tried opening a terminal and running these commands:

/Library/Image\ Capture/Devices/HPScanner.app/Contents/MacOS/HPScanner
/Library/Image\ Capture/Devices/HP\ Scanner\ 3.app/Contents/MacOS/HP\ Scanner\ 3

That seemed to fix it. I don't know if I had to do @der_be's thing first or if this works on its own.
