HP Deskjet 3522
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have a HP Deskjet 3522 printer/scanner. I consistently get messages that says "scan to computer is no longer active" & the printer goes in to an offline status. I have unistalled & reinstalled the printer and it will work for 5-10 minutes and then go right back to offline status. I can unplug the printer & plug it back in & the same thing will happen as described above. I have verified that the scan feature is enabled & the printer is set as default. Does anyone have a fix or can offer a solution to this issue?

@doc163 Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that you are getting a scan to the computer that is no longer an active message.

Do not worry. I will try to fix the issue.

Right-click an empty area of the Taskbar and select Task Manager.

In the Task Manager window, click on 'More details' near the bottom left.

Select the Start-up tab, then left-click the entry ScanToPCActivationApp just once to highlight it.

Click the 'Disable' button in the bottom right of the window.

Close Task Manager and then restart the notebook for this change to take effect.

Let me know how it goes for further assistance.

Thanks for the suggestion but, the steps you outlined still did not resolve the problem. I can unplug the printer and plug it back in and it will work (print/scan) for approximately 10-15 minutes. I will then get a notification that says "scan to computer is no longer active" & my printer goes into a offline status.  The printer is connected by wireless. it shows that it is connected, recognizes the router & IP address & is set as default in the computer itself. I have uninstalled it & reinstalled it using the trouble shooting download but again it works for 10 minutes and goes right back to offline and scan is no longer active.

Thank you for the update.

Please perform the restore the default network settings and check for the issue.

Prepare the printer for wireless printing by restoring the default network settings.

  1. Press the Wireless button to access the Wireless Settings menu.

  2. Select Restore to Default, and then confirm the selection to restore the settings.

Please refer to the following link to more troubleshooting the issue.

Have a nice day!!

I followed the steps you provided and it still failed to correct the problem. After restoring the printer to default I had to reconfigure the wireless & reinstall the  printer. As before it would work for 10-15 minutes and then I would get the same messages, " scan to computer is no longer active" and the printer is in an offline status.

@doc163

Please perform the hard rest and check.

  1. Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.

  2. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.

  3. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.

  4. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.

  5. Wait at least 60 seconds.

  6. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.

  7. Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.

  8. Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.

  9. Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you proceed

If the issue still persists, please update the Firmware

I tried the hard reset associated with the power cord to the printer without success. When I tried to update the printer firmware  I get a message that says, "the update failed turn off the printer then turn it on and try again. When I tried that the update failed again and gave me the same message. The printer & scan feature go to an offline status before the update can complete. I still have the same issue.

Let's add the Printer this way:

Create a TCP IP port

1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)

2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and left-click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.

3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.

4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

This video resource will show you how to do it:

Create & Use TCP IP port

Once done, try scanning.

If the issue persists, let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:

Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo

14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

15.) Restart the computer.

Once done, please download and install the software from here:
