Reply to TEJ1502:

Hi!  Thanks so much for responding to my issues with HP SMART and installing update software on my OfficeJet 5255.

Some things I have noted when I tried to apply the fix:

When I use the H{ Print and Scan Doctor, it eventually prompts me to use the HP Smart App.  When I click on "Get" , nothing happens.  Bottom line- I can not get the Print and Scan Doctor to run through its diagnostics.  It freeezes on "Get".

When I tried to uninstall the HP Smart App with the goal of re-installing it, I am told the uninstall did not work.  The message reads:  "Cannot uninstall HP Smart.0X80073d23 error code.

The computer does recognize my Officejet 5255 (network) computer when it looks for printers.  When asked if I want this printer set as the default printer, I click on "Yes" but nothing happens.

These problems seem to have started after my last Windows updates were installed (Windows 10 Home version 1909 (2/18/20)

I would love to have a conversation about how to work through this- it is very frustrating.

Question:  If I buy and install a new HP printer, will all this go away and let me print again?  The printer only cost me $80 originally and this problem is driving me crazy (no pun intended)..

Thoughts?

Thanks in advance.

Let us try to isolate this issue further-

Create a new user account and try adding the printer-

1. Tap the Windows icon.

2. Select Settings.

3. Tap Accounts.

4. Select Family & other users.

5. Tap "Add someone else to this PC."

6. Select "I don't have this person's sign-in information."

7. Select "Add a user without a Microsoft account."

8. Enter a username, type the account's password twice, enter a clue and select Next.

9. Tap the Windows icon.

10. Select the User icon at the upper left corner of the Start menu.

11. Select the new user. You'll then sign into your account with your password from step 8.

Use this link to download and install the new driver. Configure the printer and try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Response to TEJ1602:

thank you for your help.

thos morning when I signed on to my computer I was prompted to do a Windows update.  The update lasted tor ten minutes before it was complete and restarted my computer.  When it restarted, it allows me to run HP Smart (finally), I did the diagnosis and now the printer works!  So I guess it was a Windows 10 issue.
