Several weeks ago at the Sequoia upgrade for macOS, a window opened up and read as follows: “ Legacy System Extension. Existing software on your system loaded a system extension signed by “HP inc.” which will be incompatible with a future version of macOS. Contact the developer for support.” I am using an HP printer: ENVY Photo 6255 (6200 All-in-One Series). What do I need to do so that this printer will work when the new macOS comes around? Many thanks!!
I am running macOS Sequoia 15.2

Hi @cercis,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the message you saw about the "Legacy System Extension" indicates that your current HP printer drivers rely on older system extensions that Apple plans to phase out in future macOS updates. To ensure your HP ENVY Photo 6255 All-in-One Printer remains functional with upcoming macOS updates, here’s what you should do:
Steps to Prepare for Compatibility:
Check for Updated Drivers: Software and Drivers for HP ENVY Photo 6255 All-in-One Printer
- Visit the HP Software and Drivers page.
- Search for your printer model (ENVY Photo 6255) and check for the latest drivers or software that support macOS Sequoia 15.2 or later.
Use the HP Smart App:
- HP Smart is frequently updated to be compatible with the latest macOS versions.
- Download the HP Smart app from the HP printer setup (HP Smart app)
Remove Legacy Drivers:
- If you're using older drivers, uninstall them:
- Open the System Settings (or System Preferences) on your Mac.
- Navigate to Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP printer and click the minus (-) button to remove it.
- Restart your Mac.
Reinstall Your Printer:
- Reinstall your printer using either the HP Smart app or by adding it directly from Printers & Scanners in System Settings:
- Click the plus (+) button to add a new printer.
- Ensure your printer is connected via WiFi or USB and select it from the list.
Check for AirPrint Compatibility:
- The HP ENVY Photo 6255 supports AirPrint, a native macOS printing protocol that doesn’t require additional drivers.
- If future updates deprecate older drivers, AirPrint can serve as a fallback to ensure basic functionality.
Firmware Update for the Printer: Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Ensure your printer firmware is up to date.
- You can update it through the HP Smart app or the printer’s control panel if connected to WiFi:
- From the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
