OfficeJet 9010
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi

9010 series OfficeJet, HP smart account, subscription service in case that matters.

This is the firs time since installing the printer that I need to replace the ink cartridges.

I replaced one without issue: opened door, pressed "replace" on touch screen, printer told me to replace yellow so I did. All fine. After checking the printer then said that I needed to replace another cartridge, says fully depleted.

however now, when I open the door, printer says to press replace on touch screen to access cartridges: but the carriage does not move to the center to allow access to the ink cartridges. Stays parked on right, does not attempt to move.

powering on/off, removing power, etc etc: does not make any difference. There are no obvious paper jams, debris etc. This is a very new printer, just a few months old.

Carriage cannot be moved by hand, seems locked in place. It seems I would have to apply very excessive force to make it move, have not done that.

Printer refuses to print now: says I need to replace a cartridge first.

Are there any tricks to reset/force the carriage to centre/any way to do this with the Smart app?

Eventually, yes, but I didn't really do anything specific.

The carriage could not be moved to the left, but it could be moved slightly to the right by hand. So after nudging it slightly to the right a few times,  turning printer off/on a few times ... it fixed itself.

I have the exact same issue.  Did you find a resolve?

Update on 22nd Sept 2021....

I eventually had no option but to return the printer to HP (and they didn't make it easy).  Had me jumping through hoops in order for them to agree to take it back. They sent a courier to collect it on 16th Sept so hopefully I'll get my refund soon.

In the mean time, I purchased the exact same printer (HP Officejet Pro 9015) from Argos as I use this printer for my Etsy and Amazon accounts.  When the first ink needed replacing I laughed and asked for a drum roll from my husband as I'd had problems with the first printer.  I wasn't laughing minutes later when this new 2nd printer still gave the same issue.  Only different this time was that I didn't even get to insert one new ink.  I was very upset and returned the printer to Argos the next day.  They were amazing about it.

So I decided to go for a 3rd try but this time purchased a slightly different model, HP Officejet Pro 9012e.  I have to say though that this time I had problems getting my computer to recognise it but then used the QR code on the machine using my mobile and all went to plan.  I have now changed 3 inks.  On this machine, when you need to change the ink it doesn't ask you to click on "replace" to access the ink. You simply open the door and the carriage moves no problem.

I can't help but think the problem with the 9015 is a software issue but I'll leave that to the "experts" to sort out.

I also want to add that prior to all of the above, I had been using the HP Officejet Pro 9015 and the 9022 in tandem for several years.  Still using the 9022 along with my now 9012e.

Anyway, sorry for rambling on.  Hopefully the above will help someone out there or at least highlight to HP that they have a problem.

Were you able to resolve this? "Fiddle with it until maybe it works. Otherwise it's a big brick." does not seem to be a useful fix. I have exactly the same issue. Happened AFTER I had already successfully replaced two cartridges and was then informed I had to replace a third.

Dismayed to read the jiggling solution as I bought a new printer due the urgency of work I had to complete and I was out of warranty.   Hopefully, this issue is resolved in 9010 series 2 (9014e) ???

Well, yes, I am afraid this is a succinct description of my experience. "Fiddling until it started working, otherwise big brick"

I fiddled with it, for quite some time, to no obvious avail ... and then it started working and moved to the centre to allow normal replacement.

And yes, indeed, this was also after I had successfully replaced one cartridge, only to be told afterwards that I had to replace another one. It explicitly did not say to replace them all, in fact the opposite - it said all were fine, except one. And then changed it's mind.

Since then I have just for the fun, opened the door a few times, and always it allows me to request that the carriage moves the centre, and it always works.

It's a terrific printer, seamlessly works on the home network, multiple users including several home laptops/computers and a super-locked-down work computer, all work great. No question it's the best home printer we have owned and we were big Canon fans before this.

The cartridge replacement issue ... was the first trouble it gave ... and it was a worry 😉

I am not completely sure what 9010 series model I have, it is not too obvious.

It says it's a "9010 series" and it's less than 6 months old. Printed it's first page on 28th March

After many on/off cycles I tried opening the door while the printer was self-testing and I managed to snag the carriage as it went by during the test. I was able to replace the cartridge.

Then, of course, the printer advised me that ONE MORE cartridge needed replacing. I tried the same trick and it worked again.

So, if the carriage will not move into position, unplug the printer and open the door when it is turned on and self-testing. The carriage should slide by and you should be able to release the bad cartridge. Might have to try a few times to get the timing right.

Why is this happening all of a sudden???  It seems several of us are having this exact issue in the same sequence of events... was there an update that ruined this lovely printer?!

I use  this for my Etsy business.  I print stickers all day long -- and it does a gorgeous job... but I am at a stand still trying to replace an ink cartridge -- it has never happened before and just as with the other posts on this thread... I replaced a cartridge then got a 2nd message to replace another... and the carriage won't move...  even during self-checks... it 's not moving, so I can't "catch" it.

I can nudge it to the right -- but so far no luck getting the thing to let me replace the cartridge.  Super frustrated.  I had a lot to do today to get orders finished and am at a stop!

HP needs to address this issue. I managed to change one through the jiggle, a second showed as needing to be replaced and I have yet to get it to move so I can change it. If it ever does I'll change the third since it's low.
