Hi @Ilivethere
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Yes, you can use HP 305A cartridges in your HP Deskjet 4220 printer. The HP 305A cartridges are high-yield versions of the HP 305 cartridges and are compatible with printers that use the 305 series.
Key Points:
- Compatibility: Check that the specific model of your Deskjet 4220 supports the A versions. Generally, if the printer is listed for HP 305 cartridges, it should also accept the 305A cartridges.
- Ink Yield: The 305A cartridges contain more ink compared to the standard 305 cartridges, which means they can print more pages before needing replacement.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for this Rachel. I thought it was all clear until you said "Check that the specific model of your Deskjet 4220 supports the A versions. Generally, if the printer is listed for HP 305 cartridges, it should also accept the 305A cartridges." I have no idea how to check if "the specific model of your Deskjet 4220 supports the A versions" (I thought 4220 WAS the model!). Inside my 4220 it DOES show a picture of a 305 cartridge, but you say that only "generally" means the 305A will work. Perhaps I am just reading your response too carefully, but please confirm that my Deskjet 4220 printer, which uses 305 cartridges, also will use 305A cartridges.
