Hi-My printer is the HP 5740 series and my laptop is the HP Pavilion series. The connection stopped working about 3 weeks ago. I reinstalled with the disc but still no luck. When I ran the trouble shooting-there were the following messages: "Printer 5740 cannot be contacted over the Internet" and "computer is correctly configured." The printer shows that it is connected to the Internet. I continue to receive a response that the driver is unavailable. Thanks for any advice.

Create a TCP IP port
1. Print a Configuration Page to get the printer's IPv4 address (you can also tap on the wireless icon on the front panel of your Printer to get the IP address)
2. On your PC, go to Control Panel, from Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and left-click Printer Properties, select the Ports tab.
3. Click Add Port, select Standard TCP/IP Port, then select New Port and follow the wizard.
4. Type in the proper IP address for the printer.

Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Let's try to do a root uninstall and reinstall of the software:
Unplug any USB cable, if any, before doing this.
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose 'Delete' or 'Remove Device'
6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo
14.) Type c:/programdata and click Ok. Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
15.) Restart the computer.
Once done, please download and install the software from here:

Hi Betty,
Thanks for taking the time to help me. I got stuck on point 7-I was very careful in entering the characters but I kept getting an error message. I continued with the other points-giving a great deal of info at each stage and then installed. It looked like it was set up but I am still unable to print. I forget if I mentioned earlier that the problems started after installing Windows 10.

What is the error message you get? You may restart the Computer and Printer and try the steps again.

Hi Betty,
Thanks for checking back with me. We made it to step 10 this time and then received the following:
Print Service Properties
Error Message
Unable to remove fax-HP Officejet 5740 series, X64, type 3-user mode driver
Specified printer device is currently in use
Please note that we never used the fax function. The problems started after I installed Windows 10. Initially, the printer was stuck on the fax mode and then it stopped printing. The printer can still make copies,
Thanks for all of your help!
Tom

Hi Betty,
Thanks again for all of your help. We have tried so many times that I am about to give up and see if a cable is possible to connect the laptop to the printer.
Here is the the problem: Step 9 where 2 printer related drives appear: fax HP OJ 5740 and HP OJ 5740 series. I am blocked from deleting either one. The message is that they are in use and used on HPOJ 5740 series.
I think that the fax feature might be the heart of the problem. When print capability stopped suddenly, the print option was locked on fax-did not give a print option. We have never used a fax and have no plans to do so.
Stay safe,
Tom
