HP Officejet Pro K8600 Printer series
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus has been working fine for quite sometime. As I rarely print in color, I have set advanced characteristics to print in black ink only. Recently I had a need to print a color photo. I changed the advanced characteristics to print in color. Once completed, I went back to change them back to black ink only,. The next time I printedthe page came out in color. I rechecked the printer and found that the advanced characteristics had reverted to color. Nothing I do seems to make this change to black ink only permanent. As I do a fair amount of printing it is very inconvenient to override to black ink only evertime I print. What is the problem?

  1. In your software application, click Print.

  2. Select your printer from the list of available printers.

Thanks for the response. However, my questions was not how to override defaults during a print procedure but how to set defaults prior to printing. I have attempted this but as soon as I complete the overrides they revert back to original defaults. Overrinding on virtually every print is time wasting.

Hi @BobLF ,

Thank you for responding,

It's great to have you back 😉

Please try the steps given below:

Print only black for all your print jobs

If you do not want to change the print settings every time you print, you can change the default print settings to print with black ink only or grayscale for every print job. The steps vary by printer model and operating system.

   NOTE:

You must have the full feature printer software installed on your computer to change this print setting. Go to the Frequently asked questionssection for more information.

  1. On your computer, search Windows for Devices and Printers.

  2. Right-click your printer, and then select Printing Preferences from the drop-down list.

  3. Select your printer again, and then click the Paper/Quality or Features tab, depending on your software.

    • To print using only the black ink cartridge, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Black Ink Only.

      • Click the Black & White button.

           NOTE:

To use even less black ink at a lower quality, select the Draft quality setting when available.

    • To print high quality black & white documents or photos, change one of the following settings depending on what displays.

      • Click Advanced, click Print in Grayscale, and then select Print in Grayscale or High Quality Grayscale.

      • Click Print in Grayscale, and then select High Quality Grayscale.

           NOTE:

The printer uses a mix of black and color inks to produce a high quality black printout.

  4. Click OK to complete the change.

Keep me posted. 🙂

If I have helped you resolve the issue, feel free to give me a virtual high-five by clicking the 'Thumbs Up' icon below,

Followed by clicking on "Accept as solution" from the drop-down menu on the upper right corner,

Here are the steps I used on Windows 10.

From start type printers

Click on printers and scanners settings

Click on HP Officejet Pro 8600(network)

Click on manage

Click on Printing preferences

Click on Advanced

Change print in grayscale to Black ink only

Change print all text as black to enable

Click on OK

Click on Apply

Close out

Printing still occurs in color. If I return to printer thru the same path the options have reverted back

to the originals of print in grayscale(off) and print all text as black(disabled)

Extremely frustrating

Hi @BobLF ,

Thank you for replying with this detailed response 😉

I appreciate your time and efforts.

Root Level – printer driver reinstallation:

I recommend you delete the driver and root level and retry, follow the steps below:

In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’

6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)

8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Once it is done, follow this link and install the full feature driver software. 🙂

Followed your instructions. New software was not useful as it did not provide the wifi print option I require. Deleted all and reinstalled thru HP Support software. Printer working as before.
