When I go to print, my default printer is the "Fax" option.  I have repeatedly changed my default printer to just the printer and it keeps changing back to fax when I go to print a document.  How do I get my default printer to stay with just the print option and not the fax?

Welcome to the HP Community --

There are common sources of this issue --

1)  If Windows is in charge of your Default Printer, then Windows might be stubborn about assigning the default as it sees fit.

Preparation > Check / enable the printer as the “Default Printer”

Windows 11

Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers and scanners

Scroll down > Switch OFF Let Windows manage my default printer

Scroll up > Select Printer from the list of printers > Set as Default

Windows 10

Settings > Devices > Printers and scanners

UNCHECK (clear box) Let Windows manage my default printer

Select Printer from the list of printers > Manage > Set as Default

2)  If the full driver printer software is non-functional for some reason -- for example, the software appears to be installed but is perhaps corrupted or unusable for any reason, then the default printer will switch to whatever else it can find for that printer.

3)  Related to the installed full driver printer software but not a problem of corrupted driver or other failings --

  • Printer Properties > Advanced > Driver = Should be the HP Driver and not a Microsoft or IPP driver
  • Printer_Properties_Reprint_7Printer_Properties_Reprint_7

4)  Job Configuration  - Printer Selection during job setup

This does not generally fix a flipping, moving, stubborn default printer, but it's worth a quick check that the job setup is not working against you.
