I can scan from the computer via  System preferences, but can't scan from the printer panel. When I hit Scan, the printer sees no computer, though the computer sees the printer.  How can I get this to work both directions? It is faster to work from the printer.

I reviewed your post and I understand that you are unable to scan directly from the printer.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

Are you able to make a copy?

Meanwhile, I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

  1. With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  2. Remove USB cable, if present.
  3. Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  4. Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  5. Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle.

If you continue facing the issue, then update the printer firmware from the below link.

Refer to the below article to update the printer firmware.

Let me know how it goes and you have a great day!

Sorry for the delay in my response.  Thanks for your attention.

I was able to make a copy.

I followed the steps you listed.  The unplugging  and replugging made no difference. The printer still can’t see the computer.

I downloaded the new printer firmware. I got a message that “Officejet Pro 8600 device firmware will be reflashed to version 2020-03-11”.  Then “The firmware update was successful”.  The printer screen turned green and counted off numbers, then went black, then turned on again and printed a status report.  I turned both the computer and printer off, let sit a few minutes, then turned the computer on, then the printer back on.

However my problem remains.  I can scan if I go into Apple system preferences printers & scanners and turn the HP Officejet Pro from Print to scan.  But this doesn’t allow me to scan a series of images to one file.

From the printer, I still can’t scan. The printer doesn’t see the computer. Printer instructions say to go to Mac OSX and open HP utility.  Where is this?  All I see in my Applications is the HP Smart app, where the computer says the printer is not connected, even though it is, as is shown by my ability to scan from the computer system preferences.
