HP Envy 4500
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

This is driving me insane! Can print from laptop and tablet with no problems, so printer working ok and network fine. Every document from desktop pc that is printed comes with Printer in Error state. Have uninstalled all HP software and reinstalled but nothing works. Is it the drivers, and if so where do I find them on the system and will it mess up the other devices printing?

Thanks!

@Suzymartlet Welcome to HP Community!

Let’s try to do a clean install of the printer software.

First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.

Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Envy printer entries and uninstall them.

Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.

Restart your computer.

Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.

Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.

Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".

Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.

Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" (there is a space between .exe & /) and press enter.

Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.

Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

Open run again, type “%temp%” and press enter to get the temporary files. Delete all the files here. Skip the items which cannot be deleted.

Now restart your computer again.

Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.

Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.

Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.

Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.

Now click on this link: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software12/COL47762/mp-115701-6/EN4500_198.exe to download and install the printer software.

Connect the USB cable only when prompted and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup.

@Suzymartlet I suggest you perform a scan using this app (HP Print and Scan Doctor) - Click here for details, if that doesn't resolve the issue, please follow the below steps:

1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features

2.) Select your HP Printer

3.) Select Uninstall

4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers

5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose `Delete' or `Remove Device'

6.) Open up the run command with the "Windows key + R" key combo.

7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between "printui.exe" and "/s")

8.) Click on the "Drivers" tab

9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom

10.) Select Ok

11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows

12.) Close Devices and Printers

Then, Click here to access the HP website, find the drivers compatible with your windows and install it.

If the issue persists, please go ahead and install the windows built-in drivers:

If a full feature driver from HP is not available for your printer, you must install the built-in print driver. A full feature driver for one or more Windows versions is not available for your printer, either from the CD that shipped with your printer or from the HP website.

   NOTE:

Where is the download button? The HP print driver is built into the Windows operating system or is installed through the Windows Update feature on your computer. You do not need to download anything from a website in order to print, scan, or fax.

See the Frequently asked questions in this document for additional information, including how to scan using this driver.

FOR DETAILS & FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS, USE THIS LINK: https://hp.care/2igKeU1

(By the end of this article all the issues should be resolved)

Also, try using the HP Smart App to check if that works fine: click here for details.

If you wish to thank me for my efforts, you could click on "Accept as solution" on my post as the solution should help others too.

Thankyou for your efforts but it is still not printing.  The scanner is working, I can print from my laptop but nothing from the desktop. Could it be a firewall problem, although I am certain this has happened since an update was done.

@Suzymartlet I suggest you follow the steps I've mentioned and the links I've provided as they should help resolve the issue, if you feel its the firewall, please turn it off and check if it works, and also, try a system restore to an earlier date you know it had been working, and check if that helps.

Keep me posted.

I had followed all your steps but nothing changed. Can you direct me to a system restore please, or would I be better to pay for an HP person to come in remotely and deal with the problem.  I am very grateful for all your help but am getting very frustrated!

Thankyou!

@Suzymartlet you could use the steps in this link for a system restore, if that doesn't work, and you are more comfortable with a remote session, I suggest you talk to HP support and discuss your options,

follow the below steps to get started:

1) Click on this link - http://www.hp.com/contacthp/

2) Click on Sign-in or select the product using the below step:

3) Enter the serial of your device.

4) Select the country from the drop-down.

5) Click on "Show Options".

Fill the web-form, to populate a case number and phone number for yourself!

Also, if you are having trouble navigating through the above options, it's most likely because the device is out of warranty, if yes? please send me a private message with the region you are contacting us from,

here's how private messages work: Click here for details.
