My C5180 All-in-One stopped working after the Windows 10 Spring Update. I realize that the C5180 is a bit old and this problem has come up before after Win10 updates. I have the system set up through an ethernet connection to my gateway/router. My laptop is connected to the gateway wirelessly.
Every other time this happened I completely removed all trace of the HP software installation, including all accesory installations, and removed the C5180 from the Printer/Scanner list on the Win10 Settings. I then completely cleaned the registry and backups by using CCleaner. I then rebooted the laptop, and went to the HP website and downloaded the latest install software for my unit. I then went through the complete installation using the software, and going through it completely using the HP Print and Scan Doctor.
These steps always got the system up and running again. This time I have gone through the process 3 times and it keeps hanging at 42%. I have had to go through the task manager on the laptop to stop the process each time it hung in order to start over. I am out of ideas and I really need the system to work again. Any ideas, fixes, suggestions, links, comments, etc, would be greatly appreciated. The only thing I don't want to hear is get a new printer! Thanks in advance for the help!

Welcome to HP Forums. This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips.
I understand that you are unable to install the Printer Software and it's stuck at 42%
I'll try my best to help
I appreciate all the efforts and expertise in troubleshooting issue
Let's start with a Printer Reset
(1) Turn the printer on, if it is not already on.
(2) Wait until the printer is idle and silent before you continue.
(3) With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
(4) Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
(5) Wait at least 60 seconds.
(6) Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet.
NOTE: HP recommends connecting the printer power cord directly to the wall outlet.
(7) Reconnect the power cord to the rear of the printer.
(8) Turn on the printer, if it does not automatically turn on.
The printer might go through a warm-up period. The printer lights might flash, and the carriage might move.
Wait until the warm-up period finishes and your printer is idle and silent before you proceed
Then uninstall the Printer Driver from Root Level and re download the Full Feature Software
1.) In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
2.) Select your HP Printer
3.) Select Uninstall
4.) In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
5.) In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
6.) Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
7.) Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
8.) Click on the “Drivers” tab
9.) Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
10.) Select Ok
11.) Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
12.) Close Devices and Printers
13.) Restart the computer and download the Full Feature Software from Here and follow the onscreen Instructions
Note: Connect the USB cable only when prompted during installation
Keep me posted how it goes
Thank you 🙂

Thanks for the thoughts and instructions Krazy Toad! I had already tried several of the things you suggested previously with the same results as I had previously. I retried your list exactly as you suggested and I did get a bit further. The software did download completely and the printer showed as installed. However, when I tried to print a test page, the system failed, and the message on the Printers and Devices Settings page icon says "default, error". I am assuming this meant that my C5180 is the default printer and there was an error in printing. I then tried the Win10 printer trouble shooter, and it came back with corrected errors for "clear page error" and "reset print server". The printer icon was reset to "default". I once again tried to print a test page, and the same thing happened. I decided to try the HP Print and Scan Doctor, and after downloading and installing the software again, the same thing happened, "default, error". I just got through trying the HP Smart app from the Windows store , but the same thing happened, "default, error". The app also told me that all the software was not installed. I then removed all the software, cleaned the registry, and restarted the laptop. I am ready to start the process anew after researching other ideas further. The reason I haven't responded back to you previously is that I am still trying to solve the situation. If you have any further helpful ideas, I would really appreciate it because, as you can see, I have been trying anything anyone is suggesting, along with my own ideas, and not succeeding. It is driving me crazy!!!

Thanks for keeping me posted
I suggest you download and run the HP Print And Scan Doctor from this Link: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe
Run PSDR v5.0.2
Once the PSDR detects the Printer, it will show up the IP address and Software Status.
Select the correct Printer and click on Next.
PSDR will check if the Printer is on the Network and communication between the PC and the Printer. Once the connection check is done, click on Fix Printing
Once PSDR goes through all checks and automatic fixes, click on Print a test page.
Regardless if PSDR printed the test page or not, click on “NO PRINT”
PSDR will then notify you that there is an update available, click on continue, and PSDR will apply the patch and ask for a reboot.
Post restart the PSDR will run automatically to check for more issue. If no issue found close PSDR.
If the issue persists, please create a New User Account.
-
Select the Start button, then select Settings > Accounts > Family & other people > Add someone else to this PC.
-
Enter a user name, password, password hint, and then select Next.
- To make the new account an administrator account, select Start > Settings > Account > Family & other people, and select Change account type. Under Account type, select Administrator > OK. Restart your machine and sign in with the new administrator account.
After signing in with the New Account try installing the Software once again. Note: Make sure you uninstall the driver from Root level before reinstalling it
Let me know how it goes
Thank you 🙂

Hi Krazy Toad,
Thanks for the new suggestions, but there is a problem. The link you provided led me to the same version of the PSDR that I have and it is V 5.0.3. This version has no option for "Fix Printing" that you suggested. I went through the steps until that and my screen showed the C5180 was installed and showed the IP. I clicked on "Next" and it went to the troubleshooting page, saying it couldn't communicate to the printer. As I said, there is no option to "Fix Printing" so I am stuck. I can't seem to find a way to download the earlier version, the 5.0.2 you suggested. I tried all the troubleshooting options still no success. I think I am going to try to set it up using a USB cable instead of the networking option. I keep you informed, Thanks

I'm the Jeet_Singh & I'm at your service.
I understand that you are having trouble installing your printer on your Windows 10 PC. I will certainly do my best to help you fix this issue 🙂
Let’s try to fix this issue by doing a clean install. Follow the steps mentioned below:
- First, unplug the USB cable from the printer if present.
- Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP Photosmart printer entries and uninstall them.
- Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
- Restart your computer.
- Click the bottom-left Start button on desktop, type device manager in the search box and tap Device Manager on the menu.
- Once in device manager, click on the view tab in the top & choose “Show hidden devices”.
- Then from the device manager list, check the entries under “Printer” – If there are any entries, please right click and choose “uninstall” – In the confirm device un-install pop-up, make sure you select the box which says “Delete the driver software for this device".
- Also, check the entries under "printer queue" and "imaging devices" and repeat the same exercise. Delete any printer entry or any entry which says “Unknown device”.
- Once done, close device-manger. Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
- Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
- Again, go to Run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.
- Once done you can try cleaning out your temporary files and cached files. You can try using automated applications like some cleaner software's that you can download from the internet.
- Now restart your computer again.
- Open the Run window again, type “services.msc” and press ok to get services window.
- Scroll down to “Remote Procedure Call (RPC)” – right-click and go to properties. Make sure the service is started and startup type is “Automatic”.
- Now scroll up and go to “Function Discovery Provider Host” – right-click and select properties – Change the startup type to “manual” and start the service.
- Repeat the same exercise on “Function Discovery Resource Publication” as well.
- Click on https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/COL30777/mp-110020-3/AIO_CDA_Net_Full_Win_WW_140_408-5.exe and install the software.
- Connect the USB cable only when prompted.
If the issue persists, I would suggest here is to Uninstall the printer drivers and then try installing the Windows built-in drivers for the printer.
Simply turn on the printer and connect the USB cable from the printer to the PC. The drivers will be installed in 2-3 minutes. Go to Control panel - Devices and printers to check the printer entry and make it as default printer if needed.
Check http://hp.care/2nxKJv8 for additional instructions.
Please let me know if this resolves the issue, or if you require further assistance!
Eagerly waiting for your response!
I hope you have a good day ahead,

Hello Jeet_singh,
Thank you for responding to the thread in lieu of Krazy Toad. I appreciate all the instructions and suggestions. Unfortunately, none of the options I have tried (including those you listed) resulted in me being able to use the C5180 as I was before the Windows 10 update. I previously had it set up as a networked printer/scanner using an ethernet connection from the unit to my wifi router/gateway. It had worked through changes from Win XP to earlier versions of Win 10 after updating HP software.
However, I was able to connect the printer portion of the C5180 using the USB method. Unfortunately I could not connect the scanner portion by this method which creates problems for me because I use the scanner constantly. I am now going to remove the unit completely and try one more time to install it using the ethernet method. If i am unsuccessful in the attempt, I will reinstall the C5180 as a printer using the USB and start looking for a non HP all-in-one. Thanks again for your help!

Hi Riddle_Decipher,
Excellent suggestions and Links. You are the first tech who directed me to to HP Smart App! I was about ready to give up and stay with only having limited printer only functions with the USB connection. I tried your suggestion and opened the SmartApp, downloaded and installed the suggested software. The C5180 showed up as a network printer after I connected it with the ethernet cable to my router. I then checked on the Windows 10 Settings, Devices and Printers tab, and the C5180 was not listed. I used the Add Printer tab and set the C5180 up using the IP address. The unit showed up and I printed a test page. It worked!! I then clicked on printer settings, changed to my preferences, and selected a random email to print. It also worked!! I'm in the process of making sure I can scan to my laptop, but I am able to use the C5180 as a networked printer so I have solved the original problem. I am certain I will get the scanner section working also. I want to thank all of the HP employees who tried to help me with this problem. Just a suggestion, but I think if you guys helped out the guys who run the general HP website, the whole thing would work a lot better! Thanks again to everybody.
