Hi @George-W1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8024 All-In-One Printer is repeatedly showing the message "The Printer Update could not be downloaded," there are a few steps you can take to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check your internet connection: Ensure that your printer is properly connected to the internet. Verify that your Wi-Fi network is working correctly and that other devices can access the internet without any issues.
  • Restart the printer: Turn off your printer, unplug the power cord, and wait for about 30 seconds. Then, plug it back in and turn it on again. This simple restart can resolve temporary glitches and connectivity problems.
  • Update printer firmware manually: If the automatic update process is not working, you can try manually updating the printer firmware. Visit the official HP support website, search for your printer model, and look for firmware updates specifically for your printer. Follow the provided instructions to download and install the firmware update onto your printer.
  • Reset network settings: On your printer, navigate to the settings menu and locate the network settings. Look for options to reset network settings or restore default settings. Performing a network reset can help resolve connectivity issues and allow your printer to establish a fresh connection to the internet.
  • Check firewall or antivirus settings: Sometimes, firewall or antivirus settings on your computer can block the printer update process. Temporarily disable any firewall or antivirus software on your computer and attempt to download the update again. If the update succeeds, you can re-enable the security software and create exceptions or rules to allow the printer update process.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Follow these steps:

1) Power up the printer, if wired unplug it's USB cable from PC.

2) Go to Settings>Apps>Apps and Features to find and Uninstall any printer software.

3) Use one of these methods to remove all of the old printer drivers:

4) Now type Control Panel in Start Search, open CP, choose Icon View. In Control Panel open Devices and Printers, right click printer to delete Printer and any scanner or fax of the same name. Restart PC.

5) Go to the printer model’s Support Downloads webpage to download and install the latest full software package. Now is also the time to check for any newer printer firmware to install which matters a lot.

6) Extract Printer software, right click Setup file to Run as Administrator.

Follow the setup screens closely as you install the software. For USB it should prompt when to plug in the printer. If you have further problems reply back with results of each step.

HP printer software is a masterclass in how to create flaky software that is barely fit for purpose by offshoring and spending close to zero on development.

I've never been able to get the firmware downloads to work via Ethernet or WiFi.

The only way to do it in the past was by downloading the firmware to your PC, using something like Rufus to create a FAT32 flash drive, copying over the firmware directory to the flash drive, finding a USB 2.0 B to USB 3.0 adapter (because there isn't a USB 3.0 port on the Office Jet Pro 8022), then rebooting the printer from the flash drive....at which point the firmware update finally worked.

Alas, the HP software and drivers download page for the Office Jet 8020 series doesn't now have the firmware available for download on it's own.

Sure, you can download the usual HP Smart and 'Troubleshooting' bloatware (or download a Fax driver....Fax Anyone?).

However, that doesn't get you the printer firmware for the USB option (and the WiFi or Ethernet approaches will still fail).

Most experts on this board will explain how to spend 30 minutes deleting devices, drivers, etc. and running a fresh install....but that won't make the firmware update work either.

If you ever think about using an HP printer with a VPN....lie down in a darkened room until the feeling passes.

If you ever get bored of the 'Printer Update could not be downloaded messages on the printer' you'll probably need to cancel your Instant Ink subscription and buy some new (rather expensive) cartridges from a retailer, since with Instant Ink there appears to be no way of disabling the 'Auto Update' option on the printer.

The messages also mean that whenever you want to print anything chances are you'll first need to reboot the printer (to get out of the 'update failure' mode).

Like I say, a masterclass in abject failure.
