Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

My printer wouldn't print this morning. Upon checking the settings, the port was set as: WSD port, with a '32 character' designation after the 'WSD-'.. When I changed it to 'USB 1', it printed normally. How did it ever get changed to a WSD port, without my changing or specifying that?

@Vorticonthe1st, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding WSD Port Issue on HP ENVY 5055 All-in-One Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The issue you're referring to might have happened due to several reasons, which could include automatic updates or changes in network configurations. Web Services for Devices (WSD) is used for automatic discovery and setup across a network, and sometimes devices might default to it if there are changes in the network or printer settings.

Here are some potential reasons for this change:

  1. Automatic Driver Updates: Windows or HP updates might sometimes reinstall drivers or reset the configurations to default settings, including assigning a WSD port.
  2. Network Changes: If there has been a change in your network setup (new router, changes in network settings), the printer might switch to a network-based port like WSD for easier access.
  3. Plug and Play Settings: The printer might have defaulted to WSD for connection based on plug and play settings designed to facilitate easy network discovery.

How to Ensure Consistent Settings

To avoid this automatic switching in the future, you can follow these steps:

Set Fixed Ports:

  • Go to "Devices and Printers" in the Control Panel.
  • Right-click on your HP ENVY 5055 printer and select "Printer properties."
  • Go to the "Ports" tab and ensure it is set to the preferred USB port.

Disable WSD for Your Printer:

  • Print a network settings page from your printer to find your printer's IP address.
  • Access the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) by entering the IP address into a web browser.
  • Disable WSD settings from the network settings section.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Absolutely wonderful reply! That was quick, and really descriptive in describing the fixes for that happening! I've had my HP printer for quite awhile now, and it's always worked very well. And receiving the ink supply before it's even empty is great. To now know I can get a quick and thorough response to my problems just goes to show how good HP and the community support is! Thank you Zoey7886 !!
