Hello,
my printer HP Deskjet 2540 prints only approximately 1/2 of a page when I want to print 1 page. After that it ejects the paper and pretents to be ready, although only half of the page has been printed.
I have already
- Connected with USB and Network
- Reinstalled the driver, via Windows 11, via download from HP website
- Deleted the printer and reinstalled with HP Smart
- Run diagnostics in HP Smart
- Installed HP Deskjet Solution Support Framework
- Updated the printer firmware
- Tried to contact HP but it seems impossible
After every step I have tried to print a page, but no success. With a different PC with Windows 10 it works.
Would it help to buy a new printer or are all printers from HP bad?
Best regards.

Hi @Mathias9,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I’m sorry to hear about the frustrating issue with your HP DeskJet 2540—it’s especially disheartening after trying so many solutions. Let’s explore a few more options to get your printer working correctly.
- Does the issue happen with all types of documents (e.g., PDFs, Word documents, web pages), or is it specific to certain files or programs?
- When the printer stops printing mid-page, does the print queue show any error messages, or does it clear as if the job completed successfully?
- Have you tried using a different USB cable or a different network configuration to rule out connection issues?
Let's try these steps.
Check Print Settings and Paper Size
- Ensure the print settings match your paper size (e.g., A4 or Letter) in both the printer's properties and the document settings.
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners, select your printer, and click Manage > Printing preferences. Confirm the paper size and print quality are correctly configured.
Test Printing a Simple Document
- Try printing a basic document, like a text-only Word file, to rule out issues with specific files or formats.
Disable Bi-Directional Support
- In Devices and Printers, right-click your printer, select Printer Properties, go to the Ports tab, and uncheck Enable bidirectional support.
- Click OK, restart your printer, and test printing again.
Check Spooler Settings
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Restart.
- Then, open Printer Properties and set the print spooler to Print directly to the printer under the Advanced tab.
Use a Clean Boot to Test for Software Conflicts
- Perform a clean boot to ensure no background software is interfering with the printing process:
- Press Win + R, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- Under the Services tab, check Hide all Microsoft services and click Disable all.
- Restart your PC and test printing again.
You may also refer to other print quality issues.
Also, update the firmware. Click here
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance

Dear Elohi,
thank you for your response.
I have exported the problematic word document as pdf and the pdf was printed sucessfully.
Also, I have created a new word document with very little text but 1 page long and that could be printed directly in word.
When the printer stops, the queue empties without error message.
Same with USB cable and Wifi, also with other USB ports, but I haven't got a second cable. I have also used a different WiFi, no success with the Word document.
I have also tried all the other suggestions, except for enabling 'print directly to the printer', because that was grayed out.
Now, I have printed so many pages that I get a message that the ink is low.
Best regards,
Mathias
