My DeskJet 2720 cannot print from anything but the HP smart app.

I have done a factory reset, reconnected to the network, reinsalled the smart app, checked for firmware updates, all without luck.

My Android phone and Mac computer can find the printer, but printing never happens. No error appears either. On the phone, the print job hangs forever until I cancel it. On the computer, the print job seems to finish but never does. On both devices, I can print the same files using the HP smart without issues. This makes the printer useless to me. I need to scale my prints, which is not available in the HP smart app. How do I troubleshoot this?

Hi @Hdjrjrbjd,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating it is to have a printer that only works through HP Smart but not through other apps—especially when you need more control over scaling your prints. Let's work through this step by step.

1. Ensure the Printer is Set as Default (Mac & Android)

On Mac:

  1. Go to System Settings > Printers & Scanners.
  2. Check if your DeskJet 2720 is set as the default printer.
  3. If another printer is set as default, change it to your HP printer.
  4. Try printing from an app like Preview, Word, or a browser.

On Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Connected devices > Printing > Default Print Service.
  2. Ensure your HP printer is selected and enabled.

2. Verify Print Queue Status

On Mac, open System Settings > Printers & Scanners, then select your printer and check the print queue. If jobs are stuck, try:

  • Pause and resume printing.
  • Delete pending print jobs and retry.

On Android, check the print queue in Settings > Connected devices > Printing and remove stuck jobs.

3. Remove and Re-Add the Printer (Mac & Android)

Mac:

  1. Go to Printers & Scanners > Select your printer > Click “-” to remove it.
  2. Restart your Mac.
  3. Click “+” to add the printer again and select AirPrint instead of HP Smart.

Android:

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > HP Print Service Plugin and clear cache & data.
  2. Restart the phone and try printing again.

4. Enable AirPrint on the Printer (Mac users)

  1. Open HP Smart > Select your printer > Advanced Settings (EWS).
  2. Under Networking or Web Services, check if AirPrint is enabled.
  3. Save changes and try printing again.

5. Use the HP Print Service Plugin (Android users)

  1. Install HP Print Service Plugin from the Play Store (if not installed).
  2. Enable it in Settings > Connected devices > Printing.
  3. Try printing again from Google Docs, Photos, or another app.

If these steps don’t work, let me know the specific apps you’re trying to print from, as that can help pinpoint the issue. If possible, test printing from another Mac or Android device to see if the issue persists.

I know this is frustrating, but we’ll get this sorted! Let me know what happens after these steps.

Take care and have a good day.
