Hi,
Printer: HP Envy Inspire 7220e
Computer: MacOS 12.7.6 Monterey
Printing was working fine from any program. However, when i tried to scan for the first time, the usual System Preferences>Printers & Scanners>Scan did not work. (worked with any previous printers)
I installed HP Smart, and could scan but only from the HP Smart application.
Since than, can print only from HP Smart, nowhere else. Not even from Microsoft Word, Adobe Reader, or browser. When I try to print from any other application, the printing queue pause itself and the queue said "Encryption Credentials have expired"
I tried:
- Remove and add the printer again
- Uninstall and install HP Smart again
- Install the printer driver again
- Restart computer again
- Renew the printer certificate for 10 years
Nothing seems to work, can print only from HP Smart...which is painful. I cannot save every document and internet pages just to open from HP Smart and print it. I dont mind scan from HP Smart, but I need to print from any program.
Any help appreciated.

Hi @Lujza,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're experiencing a complex issue with your HP Envy Inspire 7220e and macOS Monterey, where the printer queue is pausing due to "Encryption Credentials have expired" and you can only print from the HP Smart app. Here's a comprehensive approach to resolving the issue:
1. Check Printer Firmware and Software
- Update Firmware: Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates via the HP Smart app or by visiting the HP support website.
- HP Smart App: Ensure you have the latest version of the HP Smart app installed. Sometimes, updating the app can resolve issues with printing and scanning.
2. Reconfigure Printer Settings
Remove and Re-add Printer:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your HP Envy Inspire 7220e and click the minus (-) button to remove it.
- Click the plus (+) button to re-add the printer. Ensure you select the correct printer from the list and install the recommended drivers.
Reset Printing System:
- In Printers & Scanners, right-click (or Control-click) in the list of printers and choose Reset printing system.
- Confirm the action. This will remove all printers and reset the printing system.
- Re-add your printer after resetting.
3. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers
- HP Drivers: Download and install the latest printer drivers for macOS Monterey from the HP Support website.
- Driver Reinstallation: After downloading the driver, uninstall any existing drivers before reinstalling the new ones.
4. Check Printer Security Settings
- Renew Printer Certificate:
- Open HP Smart.
- Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings or Manage.
- Look for an option to renew or update the printer’s security certificate.
5. Check macOS Printer Settings
- Default Printer: Make sure your HP Envy Inspire 7220e is set as the default printer.
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Select your printer and click Default Printer if applicable.
- Use Generic Printer Driver:
- In Printers & Scanners, select your printer and click Options & Supplies.
- Go to the Driver tab and try selecting Generic PostScript Printer or Generic PCL Printer if available.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
