HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My 8720 printer keeps pausing when printing. It has been doing this for many months. Sometimes it takes up to 1 minute to start the print, most times it will start the print and then pause for up to 1 minute before it continues and it may pause like this 2 or 3 times for each A4 sheet, sometimes it will pause for so long that it ejects the paper half printed and then a print error message will appear.

I have disabled the spooler and restarted it, I have checked it is up to date, I have restarted the printer after unplugging it, I have reinstalled the HP drivers - I have tried so many things. My wifi is working perfectly as is the PC. The PC is hard wired to the router but the printer is on wifi.

The problem almost certainly lies within my PC because printing from my laptop is fine.

Can anyone suggest what the problem may be?

Hi @sydh1,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 8720 printer is pausing during printing, there could be several possible reasons why this is happening. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try.

  • Check for paper jams: Open the printer cover and make sure there are no paper jams or obstructions in the paper path.
  • Check ink/toner levels: Make sure your ink or toner cartridges have enough ink or toner. If they are running low, replace them.
  • Restart your printer: Turn off your printer and unplug it from the power source for about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on again. This can help reset the printer.
  • Update printer drivers: Make sure you have the latest printer drivers installed. You can download them from the HP website.
  • Check for software conflicts: If you have recently installed new software on your computer, it could be conflicting with your printer. Try uninstalling the new software and see if that resolves the issue.
  • Check your print settings: Make sure your print settings are correct, such as the paper size, orientation, and print quality. If you're printing a large file or image, try reducing the print quality.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Disappointing reply from HP. Just a generic "check everything" response that has nothing to do with my issue. Can anyone else suggest a solution please? 50% of the time, the printer will complete an operation with no pauses, which rules out every single suggestion from Alden4.
