HP Deskjet 2542
macOS 10.14 Mojave

Hello! Hopefully you can help me. My father recently upgraded printers and gave me his old HP DeskJet 2542 to use for my various printing needs as a college student. I have downloaded all the software needed, and am working a wired usb connection directly to my MacBook Air as this is all have at my disposal as far as computers go. Everything seemed fine until I tried to print my first document, which came out incredibly fast but only posting faint light blue text and only printing heading, all of the body text f the document was missing. I opened HP utility and the ink level are all high. I ran the test print operation and that came out poor, with lines through the text. This was after several unanswered requests for the test print. The utility told me this means my printer is malfunctioning but did not tell me how to fix it. PLEASE HELP.

Please ensure your printer has the latest Firmware. You can refer to this Link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c02919168

Do you have adequate amount of ink left in all the cartridges?

Let's try cleaning the Printhead and try printing

  1. Search the Mac for your printer model name, and then click the printer name in the list of results.

    HP Utility opens.

  2. Click Clean Printheads, and then click Clean.

The printer cleans the ink cartridges.

  3. Try to print again.

  4. Examine the page.

    • If the print quality is acceptable, you do not need to continue troubleshooting.

    • If the print quality is unacceptable, follow the on-screen instructions to run a Second-level clean.

NOTE: If the printhead is badly clogged, it might require another cleaning cycle. If so, wait 30 minutes before you perform the cleaning again.
Keep me posted 😊
