The HP Printer always prints Unsupported Personality: UNKNOWN
The HP Printer is a "HP Color Laser Jet CP 1515n" connected to DEll machine with Linux Debian. HPLIP is installed.
To the instruction "print" a window appears with all correct data of the printer but the printer responds with:
"Unsupported Personality: UNKNOWN"

Hi @almorales,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the "Unsupported Personality: UNKNOWN" error typically occurs when the printer receives data in a language it doesn't understand. This can happen if the wrong driver is used or if the printer is not properly configured to handle the print job's data format.
Here's how to resolve this issue on a Linux Debian system with an HP Color LaserJet CP1515n:
1. Check Printer Driver Software and Drivers for HP Color LaserJet CP1515n Printer
- Ensure that you are using the correct driver for the HP Color LaserJet CP1515n.
2. Update HPLIP
- Make sure your HPLIP version is up to date. The version of HPLIP in Debian's repository might be outdated. You can download the latest version from the HPLIP website.
3. Configure the Printer with HPLIP
- Run the HPLIP setup to configure the printer:
4. Check Printer Configuration
- Ensure that the printer is configured to accept the correct data format (PCL6/PS3).
- You can check and modify printer settings via CUPS by accessing http://localhost:631 in your web browser.
- Go to Administration > Manage Printers > [Your Printer] > Set Default Options and make sure the printer language is correctly set to either "PCL6" or "PS".
5. Test the Printer
- Try printing a test page to see if the issue is resolved:
Refer to this document: HP Color LaserJet CP1515n Printer user manual
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
