I installed a new HP Laser Jet M140 printer this morning.  Set up was completed and I printed one page.  Now, although the printer is on, the wireless light is steady, there is no warning flashing, and the print function shows the printer as 'ready,' I get a message that the printer is offline.  It passes all the diagnostics with no issues.  Help!

Hi @Cynthia118

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details clearly. The printer shows as “ready” but appears offline when you try to print. Since the setup was successful and diagnostics passed, the issue is most likely related to the print queue or communication between the computer and the printer. Let’s go through the recommended steps to restore printing:

Check Default Printer Setting

  • On your computer, open Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
  • Ensure your HP LaserJet M140 is set as the default printer. If another printer is set as default, select your HP printer and choose Set as default.

Clear Print Queue

  • Open the printer queue by selecting your HP LaserJet M140.
  • Cancel all pending print jobs.
  • Try printing a fresh document.

Use HP App – Diagnose & Fix

  • Open the HP App on your computer.
  • Select your HP LaserJet M140 printer.
  • Run Diagnose & Fix. This tool automatically checks connectivity and driver issues, then applies corrections.
  • Steps are available here: HP Diagnose & Fix Tool

Restart Devices

  • Power off the printer, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Ensure both are connected to the same wireless network.

Re-add Printer if Needed

  • If the issue persists, remove the printer from Printers & scanners.
  • Add it again using Add a printer or scanner.
  • Select your HP LaserJet M140 from the list.

Summary:
Your printer is correctly installed and shows “ready,” but the system is marking it offline. By confirming the default printer, clearing the queue, running Diagnose & Fix in the HP App, and re-adding the printer if necessary, the connection should be restored.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
