In HP Smart it says that the Paper Tray is empty and it is not empty.

Welcome to the HP Community --

Unfortunately, without knowing the printer model, most answers you find will be generic in nature.

In general, this type of error might involve one or more of...

  • The printer Firmware is outdated -- The solution:  Udate the printer Firmware

  • The Paper Size and / or Paper Type of paper loaded in the intake tray does not match the paper detected by the printer's "Small", "Medium", or "Large" paper groups.
  • Which type of printers use this 3 group method?  Certainly the DeskJet models, maybe one or two others.

  • The Paper Size and / or Paper Type settings set in the Printer Control Panel or EWS - Tray and Paper do not match the actual paper loaded in the intake Tray -- Generally this type of mis-match results in a "paper does not match" error but there might be circumstances where the wrong message is triggered.

  • The printer hardware -- the intake Tray -- is not able to detect that paper is loaded.

Possible Solution

  • Remove the stack of paper, flex (Do not fan), stack and straighten the paper.
  • Use the instructions in your printer's user guide to reload the paper into the intake tray and close the tray.
  • Update the Printer Control Panel for Paper Size / Type or update using EWS

  • The printer includes more than one tray -- The Source (tray) settings in the print application "More Settings" are set to Automatic and should instead be set to the Tray for the current job.
  • HP_Smart_Win_PDF_Print_15HP_Smart_Win_PDF_Print_15

  • The printer needs a power Reset -- this won't help unless the issue is due to a stuck sensor that can (will) be reset by removing the printer power completely for a set amount of time.
