Hi @Alejandrocastil

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels when the printer setup seems to stall with the message “the hp software is setting up your printer.” You’ve already taken the right step by attempting the installation, so let’s go through a clear sequence to refresh the setup and get the printer working smoothly.

Restart the printer and computer

  • Power off the printer completely and disconnect the power cable.
  • Restart your computer.
  • Reconnect the printer power cable and turn it back on.

Clear pending setup

  • On your computer, go to Settings → Devices → Printers & Scanners.
  • If the printer is listed, remove it.
  • This ensures the stalled setup does not interfere with a fresh installation.

Download the latest full driver/software package

Install using HP App

  • Open the Microsoft Store and install the HP App (this has replaced HP Smart).
  • Launch the HP App and add your printer.
  • Follow the guided setup steps. The HP App will handle wireless or USB connection automatically.

Check Windows Services

  • Press Windows + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Ensure “Print Spooler” is set to Automatic and running.
  • This service must be active for the setup to complete.

Firmware update

Test print and scan

  • Once the setup completes, print a test page and perform a scan from the HP App to confirm functionality.

By refreshing the installation, ensuring the Print Spooler is active, and using the HP App for setup, the message should clear and the printer will be ready for use.
