I am attempting to setup and I stall a new 9120r printer.  Everything works smoothly until it is time to add the printer.

I have tried using the HP Smart app on both my laptop and mobile phone.  Neither can locate the printer.

I am unable to access the printers home screen/settings, as the screen shows the QR code to scan and install.  I cannot get that screen to disappear.

Any help would be appreciated!

Hi @dougiedee69

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I can understand how frustrating it feels to be stuck at the QR code screen when you just want to finish setting up your new printer. You’ve already shown great patience by trying both your laptop and mobile phone.

Let’s go through some steps that can help you move past this screen and get the printer added successfully.

1. Confirm Wi‑Fi Setup Mode

  • When the printer displays the QR code, it is waiting to be added through the HP App.
  • Make sure the printer is in Wi‑Fi Setup Mode. If it has been more than two hours since you first powered it on, the mode may have timed out.
  • To restore Wi‑Fi Setup Mode: press and hold the Wireless button on the printer until the light blinks, or use the control panel option “Restore Wi‑Fi Setup Mode” if available.

2. Add the Printer Manually in the HP App

  • Open the HP App on your Windows PC or mobile device.
  • Select Set up a new printer.
  • If the printer does not appear automatically, choose Add printer manually.
  • Enter the printer’s IP address (you can print a Network Configuration Page from the printer to find this).

3. Connect via USB First (Optional)

  • If wireless setup continues to stall, connect the printer to your computer with a USB cable.
  • Open the HP App, select Set up a new printer, and follow the steps.
  • Once the printer is added, you can switch to wireless later.

4. Restart Devices

  • Restart the printer, your computer, and your mobile device.
  • Ensure all devices are connected to the same Wi‑Fi network before attempting setup again.

5. Update Firmware

  • Once the printer is added, open the HP App.
  • Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.
  • Install any available updates to ensure smooth setup and access to the home screen.

Once Wi‑Fi Setup Mode is restored and the printer is added manually if needed, the QR code screen should disappear and the full home menu will become accessible.

Could you let me know if the printer currently shows any blinking lights on the wireless icon, or is it steady? That detail will help confirm whether it’s still in setup mode or needs to be reset.
