Deskjet F4400
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a deskjet f4400 and when I try to install the software from either the disk or from the download it goes until it says applying updates. Then the whole thing stops and never goes any further. I have deleted the drivers and even tried updating the drivers but it never lets me install the software. The frustrating part is I only need the software, I think, to fix another issue I'm having. I recently installed a new print cartridge and now anything I print has a shadow effect to the text. Oddly, the test page doesn't have shadowing and I have scanned the alignment page but it doesn't fix the problem. All the fixes online want me to use the included software to fix the issue but I can't install the software. After hours of researching and still no fix I'm ready to junk the whole thing and buy another printer from another company! Any help would be appreciated!!

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

  • Have you tried making a standalone copy and check if you have the same issue?

Updating windows and HP driver, Reinstalling HP Full featured driver may resolve this issue. Let us try these steps:

Step 1: Update windows

Open the Start Image titled Windowswindows7_start.png menu > control panel > system and security > windows update > check for updates

Once the updates are installed, restart the computer.

Step 2: If you have upgraded from Windows Vista to Windows 7, click here to download the patch

Step 3: Clean uninstallation of HP drivers

  1.  In Windows, search for and open Programs and features
  2.  Select your HP Printer
  3.  Select Uninstall
  4.  In Windows, search for and open Devices and printers
  5.  In the Devices and Printers windows look for your HP printer. If you see it listed right-click on it and choose ‘Delete’ or ‘Remove Device’
  6.  Open up the run command with the “Windows key + R” key combo.
  7.  Type printui.exe /s and click Ok. (Note: there is a space in between “printui.exe” and “/s”)
  8.  Click on the “Drivers” tab
  9.  Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it Click on it and click Remove at the bottom
  10.  Select Ok
  11.  Select Apply and Ok on the Print Server Properties windows
  12.  Close Devices and Printers, restart the computer.

Step 4: Click here to download the HP Full featured driver

Once downloaded, make sure to run the file to start the installation.

To fix the print quality issues, refer to this HP document.

Let me know how this goes.

Hi,

I had already done these steps prior to posting my issue. I found sources online that had troubleshooting ideas and the one you are suggesting was one of them. However, it did not work. Still can't install the program I need to fix my printer!

Windows drivers are installed

@reefraider

In that case, let us install a HP Deskjet F4500 Series class driver which should help.

Step 1: Remove/uninstall the pre-installed drivers completely from the PC

Step 2: Install the class drivers (connect the USB cable)

  1. In Windows, search for and open Control Panel.

  2. Click Devices and Printers, and then click Add a printer.

    Clicking Add a printer

  3. On the Choose a device or printer to add to this PC window, select your printer, click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver. If your printer is not in the list, continue with these steps.

Example of printers found in the Choose a device or printer to this PC window

  4. Click The printer I want isn't listed, and then select Add a local printer or network printer with manual settings.

Selecting Add a printer using local or network printer with manual settings

  5. Click Next.

  6. Select Use an existing port (USB001: Virtual printer port for USB), and then click Next.

  7. Click Windows Update, and then wait for the print drivers to update.

  8. Select HP from the Manufacturer list, select the HP Deskjet F4500 driver from the Printers list, and then select Next.

  9. Click Next, and then follow the on-screen instructions to install the driver.

  10. Try to print.

Keep me posted.
