HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The printer stopped printing size 6¾ (3.625 X 6.500) and A2 (4.375 X 5.750) envelopes. It used to print these envelope sizes without problem, now it prints the following message:

PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalOperatorSequence
Operator: SetColorSpace
Position: 3

The printer will print size 10 (4.125 X 9.500) envelopes.

Please assist me with fixing this problem.

@Cat_McGowan, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Update Printer Drivers

Go to HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP 3301fdw Software and Driver Downloads | HP® Support and download the latest drivers.

Install the updated drivers and restart your computer.

Reconfigure the Envelope Settings in the Printer Driver

Go to Devices and Printers (in Windows Control Panel).

Right-click on your printer and select Printing Preferences.

Ensure the correct envelope sizes (6¾, A2, etc.) are selected in the settings. If you are unsure, select a Custom size for those envelopes and set the dimensions manually.

Run HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only):

Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

Use a Different Print Method

Sometimes switching between print methods (e.g., Print from Word vs. Print from Adobe Acrobat) can work around PCL errors. If you're printing from a specific application (like Word), try printing from a different program and see if the error persists.

Reset the Printer’s Configuration

As a last resort, resetting the printer settings to factory defaults can help eliminate any misconfigurations causing the issue.

I hope this helps.

Thank you for replying. I have uninstalled and reinstalled the latest driver version 60.0.1840 several times. I have twice installed the latest firmware version 6.17.5.34-202412122146. I have also ran HPPSdr version 5.0.18 several times. And I have restored network settings and restored all factory defaults several times. I have tried printing sizes 6¾ and A2 envelopes from Microsoft Office Word and Tweaking's Envelope Printer v2.0.1, but the printer failed to print the envelopes. Using Word and Envelope Printer, the printer successfully prints size 10 envelopes. Making adjustments via Windows Control Panel Printing Preferences or the printer's control panel display does not fix the problem. When I purchased and installed the printer in late March 2025, it would print size 6¾ and A2 envelopes without problem, so something happened to cause the printer to stop printing these envelope sizes. I suspect the printer updating its firmware to version 6.17.5.34-202412122146 caused the problem, so I will search for and install the printer's previous firmware version to see if that will fix the problem. If doing that does not fix the problem, I will return the printer.
