M428FDW

Hello everyone,

I was updating the firmware on my HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw via USB when the process was accidentally interrupted (the USB cable was disconnected during the update). Since then, the printer only shows a green screen with the numbers 1 2 3 4 5, and it's no longer recognized by the Firmware Update Utility or Windows.

I tried extracting the firmware file from the latest HP firmware installer, but it only provides a .ful2 file, and no .rfu file is available. As far as I know, the .ful2 format cannot be used to recover the printer using the traditional copy /b method via USB.

Is there any way to:

  • Obtain the original .rfu file for manual recovery?

  • Use the .ful2 file with a recovery tool or USB flash drive?

  • Force the printer to accept the firmware via preboot or any other method?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying to recover the printer without taking it to a service center.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @ValdeirCaires

It sounds like your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw is stuck in recovery mode due to the interrupted firmware update. This can be a tricky situation, but here are some steps and options to try:

Step 1: Attempt a Hard Reset

  1. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  2. Wait for 2 minutes, then plug it back in and turn it on.
  3. If the green screen persists, try performing a NVRAM Initialization:
    • Turn the printer on.
    • When the HP logo appears, press and hold the lower-right quadrant of the touchscreen.
    • Release the button when the "Permanent Storage Init" message appears.

Step 2: Reattempt Firmware Update via USB

  1. Connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable.
  2. Download the latest firmware update from the HP Support page.
  3. Use the Firmware Update Utility to re-send the firmware file to the printer.
    • If the printer is not recognized, try restarting both the printer and the computer.

To perform a factory reset on your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M428fdw using a key combination, follow these steps:

Step 3: Factory Reset:

Turn Off the Printer:

  • Power off the printer and unplug it from the power source.

Access the Reset Menu:

  • Press and hold the lower-right corner of the touchscreen while plugging the printer back into the power source.
  • Keep holding the screen until the message "Permanent Storage Init" appears.

Complete the Reset:

  • Release the touchscreen, and the printer will begin the reset process.
  • Wait for the printer to restart and complete the initialization.

This process will restore the printer to its factory default settings, erasing all custom configurations.
