Hi rr179

Here are the step-by-step troubleshooting solutions, starting with the most powerful reset available to clear the "Preparing" loop.

1. Advanced Reset (Semi-Full Reset)

The standard power reset often fails for this error. Try this specific reset sequence, which is known to clear internal errors and force the setup process to restart from a clean slate.

  1. Remove all ink cartridges from the printer.

  2. Turn OFF the printer.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer and the wall outlet.1

  4. Wait for at least 60 seconds to ensure all residual power is drained.2

  5. Plug the power cord back into the wall outlet and the printer.3

  6. Turn ON the printer.

  7. Wait for the printer to prompt you for the cartridges or show an error screen.

  8. Reinstall the ink cartridges, ensuring they are securely seated and click into place.

The printer should now hopefully move past the "Preparing" screen and continue with the setup or activation.

2. Forced Factory Default Reset (Control Panel Access)

If the printer is still stuck, you may need to force a deeper reset. The process below accesses a hidden diagnostic menu, though the button sequence can vary slightly by model.

  1. While the printer is powered ON, wait for the screen to show "Preparing."

  2. Press and Hold the Power button.

  3. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer while still holding the Power button.

  4. Wait 15 seconds, then plug the power cord back in while still holding the Power button.

  5. After 3 seconds, release the Power button. The printer should start the initialization sequence.

3. Firmware Update via USB (Crucial Step)

If the printer is stuck, it may have corrupted firmware, which can cause the endless "Preparing" loop. A firmware update is often necessary, and the safest way to do this when the screen is frozen is via a USB connection from a computer.

  1. Download the Firmware: Go to the HP Support page for the OfficeJet Pro 9122e.

  2. Download the latest firmware update file (usually an .exe file).

  3. Connect the printer to your computer (PC or Mac) using a USB cable (B-type connector, not included with the printer).

  4. Run the downloaded firmware file on your computer and follow the on-screen instructions. The utility should detect the printer via USB and force the update.

If after performing the Advanced Reset and attempting the Firmware Update via USB, the printer is still stuck on "Preparing," this indicates a potential hardware fault (such as the formatter board) or a persistent HP+ activation issue.

The next step is to contact HP Support directly

I hope the above is helpful
