HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

I keep getting the same error message over and over again.  It says:

"Download unsuccessful.

The printer update could not be downloaded.

Touch 'retry' to start the download again, touch 'ok' to exit."

Each time I try to "retry" or even "ok" it still doesn't work and just comes back on again.  I even tried to download it straight from my computer but that fails too.

Hi @boxersareus,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd like to help!

Please connect the printer with a USB to your computer and allow it several minutes to complete the device configuration, a new printer should be added, listed as HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series or HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series PCL3, without any Network or letters and numbers added.

If the above steps does not fix, This might require one on one interaction to fix the issue

Hi,

Ok, I will give this a try.

Thank you!

I have this same issue all of a sudden.  Are there instructions for addressing this via a wireless connection from my computer to the printer?  I don't have a cable long enough to run across the room.
I've been using this printer for several years and this issue has never arisen.  What's prompting it now?  Thanks in advance for your help!

This did not work to download my printer update on my HP Officejet pro 9020

I have the same issue on the same model.  This morning I was so frustrated when I walked back into my office and saw the failed download message again that I just started pushing buttons.  From the failed message window, I pressed ok which of  course took me back to the window where it was attempting to download it again which, as we know, will fail.  So I pressed and held the power key for a couple seconds and then rapidly pushed the power key 6-7 times in a row and magic happened!!  It caused some sort of reboot or something, and I am finally, for the first time in 2 weeks, seeing the normal menu screen on my printer.   I have no idea what my voodoo technique did or what other problems it may cause down the road, but for now, I am going to bask in the glory of seeing something other than that annoying error message 🙂   I am not trained in printer repair so proceed with caution if you try this.

That is just hysterical, thanks for the laugh.  However, I have to agree ... it is so frustrating when that message keeps popping up.

I had the Geek Squad reinstall my printer and rename it to HP Smart Printing ... so far, so good.  I did see the message pop up once already and was able to tell my printer to ignore it.  Though, I have to say I don't like "ignoring" updates.  The message isn't popping up today ... yet.  At some point I will try to reinstall per HP's earlier instructions to me.  I may even have to try your "voodoo magic".   😄

I know it sounds crazy but I tried what Clark832 did- pressing the on and off button about 10 times. and now the message is gone and is not back today. Not sure it will stay away but it worked for now!
