I have tried restarting this printer over and over again. I'm able to print a few jobs off of my phone before I have to restart it again. He keeps telling me that it is improperly shut down. Am I supposed to really restart the printer every single time I need to print? Also I have yet to be able to print off of a chromebook. I have tried adding it manually by putting in the IP address. I also can't seem to add my printer to my products in my HP profile.

Hi @Yjiii,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out.

I understand how frustrating this must be. Your printer should not require a restart every time you print. Since you're also seeing an "improperly shut down" message and are unable to print reliably from your Chromebook, let's work through a few checks.

1. Reset the printer

  1. Turn the printer on.
  2. Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer.
  3. Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  4. Wait for 60 seconds.
  5. Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips or surge protectors).
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the printer and turn it on.

2. Check for firmware updates

Using the HP Smart app on your phone or computer, check for and install any available firmware updates. Firmware updates often resolve stability and connectivity issues.

3. Verify the network connection

  • Make sure both the printer and Chromebook are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Print a Network Configuration Report from the printer and confirm the printer has a valid IP address.
  • If the IP address changes frequently, consider assigning the printer a manual (static) IP address through your router or the printer's embedded web server.

4. Re-add the printer on your Chromebook

  1. On the Chromebook, go to Settings > Advanced > Printing > Printers.
  2. Remove the existing printer if it is listed.
  3. Add the printer again using its current IP address or let ChromeOS discover it automatically.
  4. If prompted, select the IPP Everywhere protocol, if available.

5. Restore network settings

If the issue continues:

  1. Restore the printer's network settings to their defaults.
  2. Reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network using the HP Smart app.
  3. Try printing again from both your phone and Chromebook.

Could you also let us know the following?

  • What is the exact HP printer model?
  • Is the printer connected via Wi-Fi or USB?
  • Does the "improperly shut down" message appear every time you power it on?
  • Are you able to print a printer status report directly from the printer?

This information will help determine whether the issue is related to the printer's firmware, network connection, or Chromebook compatibility.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day ahead! 🚀

Best regards,

Kuroi_Kenshi
