I bought a new HP laptop computer today with Windows 11. On my old HP laptop with Windows 10, my same HP ENVY Photo 7858 can print on both sides.
SOLVED:
Windows--Settings--Bluetooth & devices--Printers & Scanners--Printer properties--Device Settings--Installable options--Automatic Duplexing Unit
Change from Uninstalled to Installed.

I found a way to print on both sides automatically.
In Windows: Settings--Bluetooth & devices--Printers & Scanners--Printer properties--Installable options--Automatic Duplexing Unit
The default is: Uninstalled
Select: Installed

This has been an issue for a long time. When installed, the driver fails to detect that the device has a duplex unit installed. The print and scan doctor may also resolve the issue but I usually recommend the same method that you have discovered.
