HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw
Microsoft Windows 11

I'm trying to setup my printer with a USB cable.

It won't print.

When Setup gets to the screen where I'm supposed to plug it in or do it later, I can't get past that screen, even though It's connected via the USB cable.

Unfortunately, I can't connect it via network, as it's an older printer and not compatible with the newer bandwidth.

@Jaylus, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding printer that won't print with USB connection!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Since your HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw is refusing to move past the “connect via USB” step, here are the steps you can try:

1. Basic checks

Make sure the USB cable is firmly connected to both the printer and the PC.

Try a different USB port on your computer (preferably a rear port if it’s a desktop).

If possible, use a different USB cable (shorter, shielded cables are best).

2. Install the correct driver/software

Unplug the printer from USB.

Go to HP’s driver page for your model: HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw drivers.

Download the HP Smart Install package or the full feature software/driver for your OS.

Run the installer — only plug in the USB cable when it prompts you.

⚠️ Sometimes Windows’ built-in “basic” driver won’t detect properly, so the HP full driver is recommended.

3. Check Windows Device Manager

Press Win + R → type devmgmt.msc → Enter.

Look under Printers or Universal Serial Bus controllers.

If you see Unknown Device or a yellow exclamation, the driver didn’t load.

Right-click → Uninstall device → Disconnect and reconnect the USB → Let Windows reinstall.

4. Manually add printer (if the installer hangs)

Open Control Panel → Devices and Printers → Add a Printer.

Choose Add a local printer → Select USB virtual printer port (USB001 or similar).

If HP LaserJet Pro MFP M148dw doesn’t appear, click Windows Update in the driver list, wait a few minutes, then pick it manually.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
