Printer would not stay connected to wifi for longer than a few hours after HP made changes I now have  to turn off and on printer every time I have to print so it re connects wifi but only stays on for a few hours.  HP help desk made changes and said my printer was  old and I needed a New one. It works perfectly fine. However some update that occurred has created this problem I did not always have. Any solutions  besides buying a New printer. This one works just won’t stay connected to wifi.

Curious...

Did you let someone into your computer?

HP Support would not likely accept a case for an nearly vintage aged out-of-warranty device.

I am just wondering if you actually talked to someone other than HP Support.

Do you know what changes were made by whomever was doing the work?

That would  help to avoid duplicated effort, for example.

Yes, the printer is older - product introduced 2013-2014

ConnectivityApple AirPrint™; HP ePrint; Mopria™; USB; Wireless (Wi-Fi®); Wireless direct printing
Connectivity, Std1 USB 2.0; 1 WiFi 802.11b/g/n

What about the network?

Even assuming everything was / is / could be correctly set up on the printer,

There are additional considerations that have to do with your network.

For example - Things to know:

>> How is the printer connected to the network?

>> Is the printer connection type TCP/IP?  (Best)

>> Does the printer have its own assigned IP Address? (Usually Best)

>> Is the printer connected to the correct SSID named network for the supported frequency (2.4GHz).  (Best)

>> If you are not using Wi-Fi Direct, is this connection type toggled OFF on the printer?  (Should be OFF if not used)

On the router side - Routers provide the central control in your network

  • Is the router configured to broadcast and support 2.4Ghz devices?
  • Is the router set to switch or "hop" between frequencies?  (This will disconnect your older printer from the network).
  • Is the router firmware updated?
  • Is the router of recent enough manufacture to handle the network and provide a strong, stable signal?

In general,

Mesh and Dual Frequency routers and networks are sometimes not a friend to your printer, especially an older printer that cannot tolerate 5GHz.

What to do?

One of the easier "go to" solutions is to download and run the older, "Offline" version of the Doctor.

This version of the program is pretty good at picking out and resolving connection issues.

Doctor is not always "cure all" - it is a good place to start.

Resource – Choose the right doctor for the job

Open Website

HP Print and Scan Doctor for Windows

Click the green Download Now option / box

Wait!

If the problem / issue is one or more of

  • Printer is Offline
  • Cannot print in Color
  • Duplex printing has disappeared

Try this “Offline” Doctor version:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/printers/hppsdr/patches/HPPSdr.exe

After the doctor runs, Restart the computer and log in.

Doctor will finish any necessary setups.

NOTES – The “Offline” doctor

As a result of repairing issues,

Offline / Color check / Duplex check version of the Doctor may replace the printer or add a “(Copy 1)” version of the driver in Devices and Printers.

If there are two printers in Devices and Printers,

If one of them does not work,

Try sending your job to the “Copy 1” named printer.

Later

If you want / need to rename the “Copy 1” printer:

Open Control Panel > icon view > Devices and Printers

Right-Click on the printer name > Printer Properties > Tab General >

In the top box, Edit the name of the printer (For example, remove the part that says “Copy 1”)

Click Apply / OK to save change

NOTE:  The name change may take a bit of time (a few minutes), else Restart the computer and log in.

You are welcome.

All of the resetting, configuring, and putting things back together can be done manually, of course.

We can look at doing so if needed.

That said, if the old Doctor can fix it, "all good".  Smiling.

Good Luck.
