Hi @brabham20,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I completely understand how frustrating it is when your HP ENVY 5540 printer refuses to print in color, especially after you've already updated the drivers. You're doing everything right, and I’m here to help you fix this issue.

Fix Steps

1. Remove and Reinstall the Printer Using TCP/IP Port

This clears any misconfigured drivers and restores full functionality.

Steps:

  • Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners
  • Remove your HP ENVY 5540 from the list
  • Find your printer’s IP address:
    • On the printer touchscreen: go to Wireless Summary or Network Settings
    • Or print a Network Configuration Page
  • Add the printer manually:
    • Click Add a printer or scanner
    • Select the printer that I want isn’t listed
    • Choose Add a printer using TCP/IP address
    • Enter the IP and select your printer model
    • Choose Use the driver that is currently installed (recommended)

2. Check Color Printing Settings

Before printing:

  • Open Printing Preferences
  • Make sure Color is selected (not grayscale or black ink only)

You can also check this in the HP Smart app:

  • Tap your printer > Print Settings > ensure Color is enabled

3. Run HP Print Quality Diagnostic

If color still doesn’t print:

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
