Just bought a new HP printer. Didn't realize that I wouldn't be able to print from my labtop.

@Susannacana,

Welcome to our HP Community forum!

Well, if you just bought a new HP printer and can't print from your laptop, this is usually a setup or compatibility issue -not a defect. Here are the most common reasons and fixes:

1. Printer setup is not complete:

Most new HP printers won't work until initial setup is finished.

  • Power on the printer

  • Install ink/toner and load paper

  • Complete the alignment/setup process (often required before printing is enabled)

2. Missing or incorrect printer driver:

Your laptop needs the correct driver.

  • Go to HP's support site

  • Search for your exact printer model

  • Download and install the recommended driver or HP Smart app

  • Restart the laptop after installation

3. Connection mismatch (Wi-Fi vs USB):

Make sure the laptop and printer are connected the same way:

  • Wi-Fi printer: both must be on the same Wi-Fi network

  • USB printer: use a data-capable USB cable and try a different port if needed

4. Operating system compatibility:

Some newer HP printers do not support older operating systems.

  • Windows 10/11 and modern macOS versions are supported

  • Chromebooks and Linux may require HP Smart or have limited support

  • Very old laptops may not be compatible at all

5. Printer not selected as default:

On your laptop:

  • Open printer settings

  • Make sure the HP printer is set as the default printer

  • Try printing a test page

6. "HP+ / Instant Ink" models (important):

If your printer requires HP+:

  • It must stay connected to the internet

  • It requires original HP ink

  • Printing may be blocked until account setup is completed

If none of this works, the next step is to:

  • Share the printer model

  • Share your laptop OS (Windows/macOS/ChromeOS)

  • Confirm how the printer is connected (Wi-Fi or USB)

That will allow a precise fix instead of guessing on my part.

Kind Regards,
