Hi @GC1968,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

This issue occurs when using Chromebooks with HP LaserJet printers because ChromeOS enforces strict HTTPS security for printer web services. If the printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS) or HP Smart integration uses an expired SSL certificate, the Chromebook will block the connection.

Why It Works on Other Devices

  • Windows, macOS, and phones often allow bypassing expired certificates.
  • ChromeOS does not allow insecure connections for printing.

How to Fix It

Option 1: Update Printer Firmware

Option 2: Use HP Smart App for Chromebook

  • Install HP Smart from the Google Play Store on your Chromebook.
  • Add your printer through the app (it uses HP’s secure cloud print path, bypassing the expired local certificate).

Option 3: Use USB or Wi-Fi Direct

  • If you need an immediate workaround:
    • Connect the printer via USB to your Chromebook.
    • Or enable Wi-Fi Direct on the printer and connect your Chromebook directly to it.

Option 4: Reset Web Services

  • On the printer’s control panel:
    • Go to Setup > Web Services > Remove Web Services.
    • Then enable Web Services again.
  • This often regenerates a valid SSL certificate.
