I have an HP Photo 6255. It will only print a partial image on 8 1/2 x 11 photo paper. It prints the entire image on plain paper

Hi @Karen009

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how disappointing it must feel to see your photo cut off on specialty paper when it prints fine on plain sheets. Thank you for noticing the difference and sharing the details—it helps narrow down the cause.

Let’s go through the areas that most often affect photo printing so you can get the full image on 8½ x 11 photo paper:

1. Paper Size and Type Settings

  • On your computer, open the Print dialog before sending the job.
  • Confirm that Paper Size is set to 8.5 x 11 inches and Paper Type is set to Photo Paper.
  • If the driver defaults to a smaller photo size (such as 4x6), the image will be cropped.

2. Borderless Printing

  • In the print settings, look for Borderless Printing.
  • Enable borderless if you want the photo to fill the entire page.
  • If borderless is disabled, the printer may shrink or crop the image to fit margins.

3. Fit to Page / Scaling Options

  • In the print dialog, check the Scaling or Fit to Page option.
  • Select “Fit” or “Shrink to Fit” instead of “Actual Size.”
  • This ensures the entire image is scaled to the paper dimensions.

4. HP App Settings

  • Open the HP App on your Windows PC.
  • Select your printer and choose Print Photos.
  • The app provides options for paper size, type, and layout that override driver defaults.
  • Choose 8.5 x 11 photo paper and confirm borderless or fit settings.

5. Firmware and Driver Update

  • In the HP App, go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings > Firmware Update.
  • Install any available updates.
  • Also check that the Windows driver is the latest version from HP’s support page:
HP PhotoSmart 6255 Drivers and Software

6. Test with a Different Image

  • Try printing another photo to confirm if the cropping happens consistently.
  • If one image prints correctly, the issue may be with the original file’s aspect ratio.

Reference Guide

For step‑by‑step instructions on printing photos without cropping, you can refer to:
HP Printers – Print Photos (Windows)

Once you adjust the paper type, borderless option, and scaling, your printer should produce the full image on photo paper just as it does on plain sheets. Could you let me know if the cropping looks like margins being cut off, or if it’s shrinking the image into part of the page? That detail will help refine the next step.
