I have just changed phone to Google pixel 9 pro, the hp smart app states printer ready. I send a print request the app states printing yet nothing comes out. After quite a while it states failed.

Scanning works, prints from wife's iPhone works as well as laptop.

I have uninstalled the app several times, reloaded router, powered off on both printer and phone.

Send print...same result

@CanaryPaul, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your Pixel 9 Pro is having trouble printing to your HP DeskJet 3050 despite other devices working fine, it seems to be an issue with the app or the phone's settings. Here’s a step-by-step troubleshooting guide to help you resolve the problem:

Try These Steps (In Order):

Clear App Cache and Storage

Even after reinstalling the HP Smart app, some residual data might remain:

  • Go to Settings > Apps > HP Smart > Storage & cache.
  • Tap Clear Cache and then Clear Storage.
  • Reopen the app and sign back in.

Check Default Print Service Settings

Ensure that the print services are correctly configured:

  • Go to Settings > Connected Devices > Connection preferences > Printing.
  • Tap on Default Print Service and HP Print Service Plugin (if installed).
  • Make sure both are enabled.
  • If the printer shows up, remove and re-add it.

Try Printing a PDF Directly (Bypass HP Smart)

To see if the issue is with the HP Smart app:

  • Open a PDF in Files, Google Drive, or another app.
  • Tap Share > Print and select your HP printer.
  • Check if it prints without using the HP Smart app.

Check for VPN or Private DNS

VPNs or certain DNS settings may interfere with printing:

  • Disable any active VPNs.
  • Go to Settings > Network & internet > Private DNS and set it to Off (temporarily).

Test with a Different File Type

To rule out file compatibility issues:

  • Try printing a photo or a simple text document.

Try Connecting via Wi-Fi Direct

This can help determine if it’s a network issue:

  1. On the printer, enable Wi-Fi Direct (usually via the printer display or info button).
  2. On your Pixel 9 Pro, connect to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network (it typically starts with "DIRECT-").
  3. Try printing again via the HP Smart app or the Print Service Plugin.

Enable HP Print Service Plugin

If it’s not already installed:

  1. Install the HP Print Service Plugin from the Play Store.
  2. Go to Settings > Printing and enable it.
  3. Try printing directly from another app (like Docs, Photos, or Chrome).

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

Thanks for replying to me,

I have deleted cache and storage as requested, when I logged into the HP smart app it asked me to add a printer.

I selected printer already on network, ipaddress and printer were correct.

Printer stated it was asleep.

when I went to settings in the app there was nothing about the printer???

I managed to print a pdf outside the app ok.

No .jpg came out??

Turned off DNS

Printer status was now orange??

Printer waiting

Sent print, nothing came out, and app stated printer asleep

Installed the HP plugin, checked settings still nothing re printer

Then tried to print outside HP and nothing printed inside or outside the apps.

I cleared cache and storage on both apps, still nothing came out..

Now uninstalling both apps, and trying to get it back to at lease print something outside the app.

So not realy working as you would expect.....now at a loss again

@CanaryPaul, Thanks for the detailed update — really helps paint the full picture. You’ve clearly done everything methodically, and it should be working by now, so yeah — this is definitely not how it’s supposed to behave. But the fact that it printed a PDF once outside of the HP Smart app is promising — it suggests the core connection can work, but something’s still interfering intermittently.

Let’s break this down and try to get things back on track step-by-step.

Manually Set a Static IP on the Printer

If the printer's IP keeps changing or your devices aren’t consistently recognizing it:

  • Access your printer’s network settings via its control panel or by entering its current IP address into a web browser.
  • Navigate to IPv4 Settings and select the option to set a Static IP (not Automatic or DHCP).
  • Example: Set the IP to something like 192.168.1.199 (ensure it’s outside your router’s DHCP range).
  • Save the settings and restart the printer.

Double-Check Router Settings

  • AP Isolation or Client Isolation: Check if these settings are enabled on your Wi-Fi, as they can block communication between devices.
  • Wi-Fi Band: Try connecting both your Pixel and the printer to the 2.4GHz Wi-Fi instead of the 5GHz band, especially if the printer is older.
  • Firewall Settings: Temporarily disable any firewall settings on the router to test if they are causing the issue.

Forget and Re-add the Printer from Pixel's System Print Menu

  1. Go to Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Printing > HP Print Service Plugin.
  2. Tap Add Printer. If it’s not listed, tap All Printers and then Add by IP Address.
  3. Enter the printer’s static IP address (if you set one) and try printing directly again from Google Docs, Photos, or Drive.

Try Wi-Fi Direct Only for Now

Since network routing seems unreliable, test printing via Wi-Fi Direct:

  • On the printer, enable Wi-Fi Direct.
  • On your Pixel, go to Wi-Fi and connect to the network named DIRECT-xx-HP... (the password is usually printed on the printer's info sheet or displayed on the screen).
  • Try printing from Google Drive or Photos again.

Check for Background Battery/Data Restrictions

  1. Go to Settings > Apps > HP Smart + HP Plugin.
  2. Under Battery, set to Unrestricted.
  3. Under Mobile Data & Wi-Fi, allow Background Data and Unrestricted Data Usage.

Final Step: Test with Guest Profile

To rule out any device or profile-level settings:

  1. Swipe down on your Pixel and tap the profile icon.
  2. Select Add Guest.
  3. Open Chrome, sign into Google, and install HP Smart.
  4. Try adding the printer and printing from this guest profile.

I hope this helps!

Hi Max,  I might have got the wrong end of what you requested as didn't want to mess with the router as I have boosters and using the wi/fi quite a bit.

However this is what I have since found out this afternoon.

My printer is an HP4228FC, HP Envy Pro 6400

I have the app installed on my laptop, so tested out printing PDF and Pictures via the app in the laptop, all worked ok.

I then tried a photo print on the Pixel 9 (picture I took yesterday) printed ok..

Printed a pdf also printed ok, however on both occasions I needed to go into the printer setup within the app, reconfirming the papersize, also changed to B/W......

Then tried again not changing anything and printing something from last week....Nothing

I cancelled the prints within the app, after a while they did go, however the printer went into sleep mode.

I sent another print changing the setup to B/W nothing.....printer still asleep!!!

Tried printing outside the app, worked ok.

Powered off printer then on, tried again, after removing all from cache, printer asleep and never wakes up.

I checked the pixel setup, App can access the pictures

Pixel sees HP printer as default and print services on.

No DNS, Automatic Private DNS.

I really think this is now a Pixel 9 issue, the wakeup instruction is not being recognized either to start of the print or wakeup the printer, the picture is printed ok on the app within the laptop but not phone.

If you would still like me to investigate this week as per the network setting I will try and do so.

I will need to find out how to manually setup the ip address on the printer, I am unable to find any setting within the pixel 9 to downgrade to a 2.6 network.
