Color Laserjet Pro MFP M479fdw
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I wanted to print more accurate colors with my M479fdw, so I paid for a service that creates custom ICC printer profiles. They sent me test charts I had to print out and send back to them, and they sent me an .ICC file. The problem is, that the profile doesn't seem to change the printouts. And support from the service is silent, of course...

I know that quite a lot of photo apps (Photoshop etc.) can apply color profiles by itself. But I don't want to use the color profile only with certain programs; I want to use it system-wide. And the Color Profiling Service said that applying a profile via the Windows Color Management would activate it system-wide, without the need for special programs to print from. Here's how I installed the profile:

  • copy <profilename>.ICC to "C:\Windows\System32\spool\drivers\color"

  • right-click and "Install"

  • went to "Color Management" in Control Panel

  • selected my printer

  • ticked "Use my settings for this device"

  • selected "Manual"

  • added profile via dialog

  • set profile as standard

  • close

With the actual full driver package, I tried different color settings in the driver dialog and different print processor & print data settings, but the profile doesn't change the printout. I also tried the universal print driver. Its PLC-version has some ICM-settings (ICM by host, ICM by printer, color intent) but again, no change.

Can anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong? I appreciate any comments. Thanks for your time.

Greetings

Simon

It's very likely that M479 doesn't support ICC profiles and the colour management is done by the printer.

Only professional HP printers can use ICC profiles, a M479 is low-end color laserjet for small office use nothing special.
