I am running with Linux - ubuntu 22.04.5  I am trying to install a HP_ENVY_Photo_6200_series  The printer is installed and wired directly to the printer from the computer.  This machine was given to me by my wife who bought another hp as this one is wireless and was getting to not be wireless.

Anyway, my machine can install whatever is necessary.  it actually has drivers on its system if I knew which one to install as well as the other stuff I need to do.  I am pretty ignorant on this stuff and need hand holding to get it done.

Thank you.....................

Hi @jwhit12121,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Step 1: Install HPLIP (HP Linux Imaging and Printing)

HPLIP is a package that allows printing, scanning, and faxing with HP printers on Linux.

Open Terminal:

  1. Ctrl + Alt + T

Install HPLIP: Execute the following command:

  1. sudo apt-get update
  2. sudo apt-get install hplip hplip-gui

Step 2: Configure the Printer

Open HP Device Manager:

  • Type hp-setup in the terminal and press Enter.
  • This will start the HP Device Manager GUI.

Setup Printer:

  • Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your HP ENVY Photo 6200 Series printer.
  • Choose the USB connection option when prompted.
  • HP Device Manager should detect the printer and guide you through the installation process.

Step 3: Verify Installation

Check Printer Status:

  • Open the Printers application in Ubuntu.
  • Ensure your HP ENVY Photo 6200 Series is listed and set as the default printer.

Print Test Page:

  • Select the printer and choose the option to print a test page to verify that it is working correctly.

Troubleshooting Tips

Check Printer Connection:

  • Ensure that the USB cable is securely connected between your computer and the printer.

Reinstall Drivers:

  • If the printer is not detected, try uninstalling and reinstalling HPLIP:
    sudo apt-get remove hplip hplip-gui
    sudo apt-get install hplip hplip-gui

Update System:

  • Ensure your Ubuntu system is up-to-date
    sudo apt-get update
    sudo apt-get upgrade

Thank you for the reply.  I knew I had written something but didn't know how I could find it.  I'm not even sure I can again.  Anyway, I think I have done the HP Envy PHOTO 6200 series, hpcups 3.21.12 install ran hp-setup stuff.  Its kinda interesting.  When I was done I had 3 new machines instead of the one.  Deleted the others.  than I printed a test and it colorfully came back.  That's where it all stops.  it still wants to be wireless.  I got this because the wireless was not working.  I have wi-fi, etc.  I can try and make it work but I am going to need help on that one.  I think one of my main problems is the linux but that's what I'm using.

Thanks again - thoughts?  Oh, it might be easier for me if you wanted to email me at drufus2002@**bleep**

I wanted to add this to the above and failed.  then I tried to send this and lost it.  I am replying but its an addon to what I wrote:

This is what happened when I ran hp-setup:

greg@greg-desktop2:~$ hp-setup

HP Linux Imaging and Printing System (ver. 3.21.12)
Printer/Fax Setup Utility ver. 9.0

Gtk-Message: 14:00:02.632: Failed to load module "xapp-gtk3-module"
Searching... (bus=usb, search=(None), desc=0)

with all the stuff above printing on the terminal I also got "HP Device Manager" with several pages of question, etc.
I have no idea if what I entered got taken or not but it ran me through all the entries, I think.  I should also mention that I can run "test text" which gets me a colorful bunch of a printer test, including colors.  This machine still has the ink in it from my wife when she had it.

Thoughts?

Hi @jwhit12121,

Thank you for the response.

Set Printer to USB Mode Instead of Wireless

Since the printer still "wants to be wireless," force it to work only via USB:

On the Printer’s Control Panel → Wireless Settings

Disable Wi-Fi or set it to USB Mode

Restart the printer and computer

If there’s no option to disable Wi-Fi:

Try setting up the printer without connecting it to a network during hp-setup

Set USB Printer as Default

Sometimes, Linux defaults to a network printer if one exists. Manually set the USB printer as the default:

Open Settings > Printers

Find HP Envy Photo 6200 (USB)

Right-click → Set as Default Printer

I hope this helps.
