HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.15 Catalina

Trying to set up my old printer (ENVY 7640 e) on new Mac.  The old software that transferred from old Mac requires Rosetta, and I'd like to use native software for Apple silicon, if possible, and would also like to have HP drivers, rather than AirPrint.  Downloaded HP Easy Start app, and ran app.  It finds the printer on the network, prompted me to download both "Essential Software" (which it says is the drivers and HP Utility), and Easy Scan app, and claimed that they were installed (however I cannot find them on the hard drive).  It then asked me if I wanted to switch to HP drivers or continue to use AirPrint.  I chose switch to HP drivers, and the app then hangs at "Add and Verify Your Device" screen.  I've tried 4 different times, and consistently hangs at the same place.  It says "Setting up the device" and there's a spinning circle, that simply won't go away, as shown in attached screenshot.  Can't figure out what I'm doing wrong, or how to get software installed.  I also see that there's a version of the Easy Scan app available on the App Store, but that version is 2.0.0, while the version that Easy Start says it is downloading is 2.0.0.2, so not sure if I should just download the app from the App Store, and dispense with hp drivers and use AirPrint.  Thanks for suggestions.

Hi Regux, thanks for the suggestions.  Responses/comments/questions below:

1. Yes, both the printer and Mac are connected to my home WiFi

2. Printer doesn't have a wireless light, but it is connected to the network.

3. According to this link, the Mac Network Utility has been deprecated, and I don't see it on my Mac.

4. Not sure what info you want/need from the Wireless Status Menu.  You mean the menu that pops up when I option-click on the wireless icon in the status bar?

5. I had already tried deleting the old printer from the printer list, and reinstalling it using AirPrint.  That's the only printer listed now.

6. I checked the printer firmware on the printer itself, and also tried telling the printer to update the software, and it says that it is up to date.  The firmware link in your message below is out of date, and says ""We can't seem to find the page you were looking for."

7. Mac software is up to date.

Finally, to be clearer, I AM able to print from the new mac to the printer, using AirPrint (though the only things I tried to print came out with the wrong coloring).  I was hoping I could print using HP updated drivers, and I was hoping I could download native scanning software rather than having to rely on old software via Rosetta.

Thanks for any further suggestions.

Regux's replies now appear to be a bot, and for reasons not clear to me, are not appearing in this thread.  In case Regux is not a bot, the problem is not solved.  My problem was not that I couldn't print, it was that I could not install the drivers or the scan or print software that runs natively on non-Intel Macs, as described in detail in my original post.  Hoping someone has had the same problem, and has a solution.  Thanks.

@DavRoc,, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer setting up issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

To set up your HP ENVY 7640 e-All-in-One Printer on macOS Catalina using native software and HP drivers, you can follow these steps:

Using HP Easy Start

Download HP Easy Start from 123.hp.com.

Install HP Easy Start utility, which includes fax and/or scan drivers, and advanced HP features (HP Easy Scan, HP Easy Color, custom paper sizes, job storage, folder or stapler finishing, watermark, etc.).

Launch HP Easy Start:

  • Enter your printer model number.
  • Select the printer and follow the utility prompts to automatically install the software and add the print queue.
  • For full-feature scan capability, ensure that both Essential Software and HP Easy Scan checkboxes are selected.

Place the item to be scanned:

  • On the scanner glass or in the automatic document feeder (ADF).

Initiate the Scan:

  • In the Applications folder or from the Dock, select HP Easy Scan.
  • Select the printer from the Scanner drop-down list.
  • Choose the scan type from the Presets menu and click Scan.

Save the Scanned Image:

  • Click Send, then select Folder.
  • Select the destination and file type from the Where and Format drop-down lists.
  • Click Save.
To save multiple pages to a single file, select PDF as the format, and then select the check box next to Save all items to a single file

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Hi Zoey7886, I appreciate the response, but as I indicated in my original post, I am having problems insatalling the drivers and apps using the Easy Start software, as you suggested.  As I indicated in the original post, when I run the Easy Start software, it consistently hangs at the :Add and Verify Your Device" screen (I attached a screenshot).  As a result, I can't scan.  Hoping you can help, assuming you are an actual human being, and not a bot.  I'm beginning to doubt that anyone answering questions on this forum is an actual human, as all of the answers I see seem to be stock answers based on keyboards.  I hope that I am wrong.

Thanks

Hi @DavRoc

I totally get how frustrating this must be, and I appreciate you taking the time to explain everything in detail. Let’s try a few steps to get this sorted out so you can use the HP drivers and scan software as intended.

Restart Your Devices

Power off your printer and Mac completely.

Unplug the printer for about 30 seconds, then plug it back in and power it on.

Restart your Mac and try running HP Easy Start again.

Check Your Network Connection

Ensure both your Mac and printer are on the same WiFi network.

If possible, try using a wired connection (Ethernet) just to eliminate any WiFi-related issues.

If your router has both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, make sure both devices are on the same one.

Manually Download & Install Drivers

Since HP Easy Start is hanging, let’s bypass it and install the drivers manually:

Go to HP Software & Drivers

Enter your printer model (ENVY 7640 e) and select your macOS version.

Download and install the "HP Easy Admin" tool (if available) or manually download the latest drivers.

After installation, try adding the printer again through System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Remove Any Stuck HP Printer Queues

Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners

Select your HP printer and click the “-” (minus) button to remove it.

Restart your Mac, then re-add the printer.

Take care, and have an amazing day!
