OfficeJet Pro 8710
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

When my 4 year old Dell Inspiron laptop was auto-upgraded to latest rev. Windows 10, my printer, HP OfficeJet Pro 8710, stopped working. I spent 2 hours on phone with local tech support, then 2 hours on phone with HP tech support, then 2 hours on phone with Microsoft tech support -- printer still not working. Turn Print Spooler on, it turns itself off when we try to print.
Microsoft tech support said my WIndows installation was corrupted and I needed to reload my earlier version Windows 10, which I did (with MS support assistance). Still didn't help. In desperation went back to local tech support who said I needed to do a clean installation of latest rev of Windows 10 AND, get a new printer or else every time I load the drivers for my HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 it will cause same problem and require same solution.
Needless to say I'm scared to load HP's updated drivers for that printer, lest the costly ($600 to date) and time consuming problem recur. My 8710 was working fine before the Windows update and I really don't want to spend the money for a new printer, What can you tell me to give me confidence that I should download the driver update and continue to use my old printer? Or do I really have to buy a new one?. Thank you.

Welcome to HP Forums,

This is a great place to get support, find answers and tips,

Thank you for posting your query, I'll be more than glad to help you out 🙂

As I understand, your printer does not print after Windows Update,

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, however, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers?

What is the error message while trying to print?

How is your printer connected to the PC (USB or Wi-Fi)?

Here a few steps we could try to resolve the issue:

Root level uninstall and reinstall printer drivers:

  • Go to Control panel – Programs and feature – Select all the HP OfficeJet printer entries and uninstall them.
  • Now go to Control panel – Devices and printer – Select all the printer entries and remove the device.
  • Then press the "windows key" + "r" to get the "Run" window open - Type "printui.exe /s" and press enter.
  • Under print server properties, go to drivers - remove any entry there as well.
  • Again, go to run window, type – “c:/programdata” – Go to Hewlett Packard folder, remove any printer related folders & files.

To reinstall, click here (Printer full feature drivers)

If the issue persists, you could try installing basic drivers: Click here or use Windows built-in driversClick here

Let me know how this goes,

Cheers!
