Hello everyone.

I'm getting the following message on my HP Officejet Pro 8620:

Problem with the printer or ink system.

Unplugging it as recommended didn't help. To my ears, the spray during automatic cleaning doesn't sound particularly wet.

My newly installed yellow ink cartridge has an expiration date of 03/2024. The ink sounds quite runny. The ink flow after the sprays is also a normal, bright yellow. I'm now getting a message that it's a used original cartridge. Since I haven't used cartridges twice before, I don't know if this message is normal.

Can anyone advise me on whether it's worth buying a new yellow cartridge?

Can I continue using the printer without color cartridges?

Hi @Manduela

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thank you for sharing the details so clearly. Let’s go step by step to address the “Problem with the printer or ink system” message on your HP Officejet Pro 8620.

1. Reseat the cartridges

  • Open the cartridge access door.
  • Remove the yellow cartridge and check for any protective tape or debris on the contacts or vent.
  • Wipe the electrical contacts gently with a lint‑free cloth.
  • Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.
  • Repeat this for all cartridges to ensure proper seating.

2. Check the cartridge status

  • A message about a “used original cartridge” can appear if the printer detects that the cartridge has been previously installed. This does not necessarily mean the cartridge is faulty.
  • If the cartridge is recognized and prints normally, it can still be used. However, if the error persists only with this cartridge, replacing it may help.

3. Run a cleaning cycle

  • From the printer’s control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead.
  • Allow the printer to complete the cycle and check the print quality.
  • If the spray sound seems weak, repeat the cleaning up to two more times.

4. Ensure proper ink flow

  • Verify that the cartridge vents are clear. A blocked vent can prevent ink from flowing correctly.
  • Hold the cartridge upright and gently tap it to ensure ink is settled.

5. Using the printer without color cartridges

  • This model requires all cartridges to be installed for normal operation. It cannot print with only black ink installed. Even if you print in grayscale, the printer still needs all cartridges present.

6. Power reset

  • With the printer powered on, disconnect the power cord.
  • Wait at least 60 seconds.
  • Plug the cord back in and power on the printer.
  • Check if the error clears.

By following these steps, you can confirm whether the issue is with the cartridge itself or the printhead system. If the yellow cartridge continues to trigger the error after reseating and cleaning, replacing it with a fresh cartridge would be the most reliable way forward.
