I've just upgraded my HP zbook studio x360 G5 to Windows 11 (from Windows 10) and have attempted to install and set up the printer software for our HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.

I am using the full software (Full_Webpack-40.16.1234_1-OJ7740_Full_Webpack.exe) from the support page, as I want to have the full capabilities, including scan to computer, which I use often. I have successfully installed this previously (approx 6 months ago) on a HP Elitebook running Windows 11 and it worked fine. However, I cannot get the software to install correctly on the zbook.

When I run the installer, it installs the driver successfully and then attempts to connect to the printer, the printer is found and then I click next and almost immediately get the following:

I have now used the HP Smart app to add the printer and can now print, but this doesn't have the advanced options in the full software, such as scan to computer. However, it does prove that the connection to the printer is not the issue.

The zbook is using Windows 11 25H2 and has the latest windows updates. The network connection is wired (ethernet) and not WiFi.

Has anyone else been able to install the full software for the 7740 on Windows 11? If so, what steps did you take to get it to install?

Hi @gis-4,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the details and the screenshot. The image shows the HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 installer error screen with the message:

Unsuccessful Network Installation
The device was unable to be installed over the network.
Options: Retry or Cancel.

This confirms the installer detects the printer but fails during the network configuration step.

Why This Happens on Windows 11 (25H2)

  • HP’s older Full Feature Software (Full_Webpack) was designed for Windows 10 and early Windows 11 builds.
  • Windows 11 25H2 introduces stricter network security and driver signing policies, which can block legacy installer components.
  • HP Smart works because it uses modern APIs, but the full software relies on older protocols.

How to Fix It

  1. Run the Installer in Compatibility Mode
    • Right-click the installer → Properties → Compatibility.
    • Check. Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 10.
    • Also, check Run as Administrator.

  2. Temporarily Disable Firewall/Defender
    • Go to Windows Security → Firewall & Network Protection → Turn off temporarily.
    • Re-enable after installation.

  3. Use USB for Initial Setup
    • Connect the printer via USB during installation.
    • Once installed, switch to network mode in HP Printer Assistant.

  4. Install HP Scan Extended Separately
  5. Update HP Drivers via Windows Update
    • Settings → Windows Update → Optional Updates → Install HP printer drivers.

  6. Alternative: Use HP Smart + HP Scan Extended
    • HP Smart for printing.
    • HP Scan Extended for advanced scanning.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi - thanks for the reply and suggestions...but it still doesn't work. See below....

Run the Installer in Compatibility Mode

  • Right-click the installer → Properties → Compatibility.
  • Check. Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows 10.
  • Also, check Run as Administrator.

Doesn't work. There is no option for Windows 10 under "Compatibility Mode". If I choose Windows 8 and run as administrator, it still produces the same issue. It finds the printer, but then won't connect.

Temporarily Disable Firewall/Defender

  • Go to Windows Security → Firewall & Network Protection → Turn off temporarily.
  • Re-enable after installation.

We have ESET end point protection software. Even with this disabled, it doesn't install.

Use USB for Initial Setup

  • Connect the printer via USB during installation.
  • Once installed, switch to network mode in HP Printer Assistant.

This does enable installation with USB, but then the only option to "switch to network mode" in HP Printer Assistant brings up the same dialog as at installation and it still won't connect to the printer.

Install HP Scan Extended Separately

This software has exactly the same installation issue as the full printer software.

Update HP Drivers via Windows Update

  • Settings → Windows Update → Optional Updates → Install HP printer drivers.

All drivers are up-to-date.

Alternative: Use HP Smart + HP Scan Extended

  • HP Smart for printing.
  • HP Scan Extended for advanced scanning.

HP Smart does work but doesn't have scan to computer.

If anyone has any other ideas, please let me know.
