I was using an old Dell PC on Windows 10, and I've just upgraded to a Dell i9 XPS.
I've installed all the HP smart drivers, set all the preferences to default to A4 paper, restarted the PC and the printer, the defaults all show as A4, but the printer reports back that the only paper available is Letter size.
As a consequence it won't print properly.
I am now at a loss!
Any suggestions would be gratefully appreciated!

Hi @101Simon,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be glad to help you!
I understand how frustrating it must be to have your printer persistently defaulting to the wrong paper size, especially after carefully setting everything to A4. Let’s see if we can get it working smoothly.
A few questions to Clarify the Issue
- When you print, are you selecting A4 in the print dialog for each job, or are you relying solely on the default printer settings?
- Does the printer report Letter size only on certain types of print jobs, or is this happening across all applications?
Let's try these steps.
Verify Printer Properties in Windows Settings:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select your HP ENVY 4500 and click on Manage > Printer properties.
- In the Advanced or Preferences tab, confirm that the default paper size is set to A4.
Adjust Paper Size in HP Smart:
- Open HP Smart and go to your printer settings.
- Locate the paper size options and ensure that A4 is set as the default in HP Smart as well. Some settings in HP Smart may override Windows settings.
Reset Printing Preferences in the Application:
- In the application you’re printing from (e.g., Word or Adobe Reader), check the print dialog and confirm A4 is selected.
- Ensure that the “Fit to Page” option or similar settings are adjusted for A4 if the application overrides default settings.
Update or Reinstall the Printer Driver:
- Download the latest driver for your model from the HP Support site, specifically for Windows 10.
- Uninstall the current driver in Control Panel > Devices and Printers > Remove Device, then reinstall the updated driver.
Check Paper Tray Settings on the Printer Itself:
- On the printer’s control panel, go to Settings > Paper Settings or similar option and confirm A4 is selected as the tray paper size.
- Some HP models require confirmation of the tray’s paper size to prevent discrepancies.
