ENVY 5540
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have transferred my HP ENVY 5540 printer from my old WIndows 7 laptop to my new Windows 10 laptop.  I have not been able to get it working properly to date.  At first although it was working it would not offer colour printing.  I tried several solutions that were suggested, but it has made the situation worse.   Now the HP suggested latest software will not install correctly.  It says it has completed the installation, but when you look there is no option to run it from the start menu and it is not showing in the Programs and Features APP.  Only the HP ENVY 5540 Series Help is showing in that list.  I have tried uninstalling, reinstalling, but all no avail.  Any suggestions would be gratefully received!

Search Windows for 'HP Envy 5540' to open the printer assistant and check if it opens up. By this, we can conclude if the printer driver for Win 10 has installed correctly or not.

If the issue persists, you may create a new user account and try installing the driver. As mentioned in my previous post, this seems like a compatibility issue between the printer driver and the Win 10 OS.

Glad to know you are able to scan using the HP Smart app. You may also try printing using the app and check if that works. This app supports both printing and scanning.

Let me know how this goes.

Welcome to HP support community.

Perform root level uninstallation to remove all the printer related software's.

  • In Windows, search for and open Programs and Features.
  • Select your HP printer.
  • Select Uninstall.
  • In Windows, search for and open Devices and Printers.

  • Open up the run command with the "Windows Key + R" key combo.
  • Type printui.exe /s and click OK.
  • Click on Drivers tab.
  • Look for HP Printer driver. If you see it click on it and click Remove at the bottom.

  • Remove all instances of the same.
  • Select Apply and OK on the Print Server Properties windows.

Hi Sandytech20

Thank you very much for your response.  Unfortunately there is a fundamental problem with your solution.  Although the HP recommended software for this printer says that it has installed OK, when you look at Programs and Features, only the Help is showing and not the basic software.  So there is nothing to uninstall and I could not find any way of getting the software to fully install, despite it saying each time that it had installed!

I switched to trying the HP Smart APP and although I had some problems getting it installed for all users on my laptop to utilise, eventually I did get there.  I know seem to be able to print and scan using my ENVY 5540 All in one device through other options rather than the HP recommended software for this product on my W10 laptop!

I wonder whether there are any W10 compatibility issues as everything worked fine with the standard software on my old W7 laptop?

This seems like a compatibility issue between the printer driver and the Win 10 OS. Let us try installing the printer using the IP address.

  1. On the PC, go to Control panel > Devices and printers > Add a printer(at the top)
  2. Under 'Choose a device or printer', click on 'The printer I want isn't listed'.
  3. Select 'Add a printer using a TCP/IP address'
  4. Find the IP address of the printer by tapping on the wireless icon on the printer screen
  5. Type in the 'IP address in Hostname or IP address' box, click next
  6. Proceed to the next steps by following the on-screen instructions.
  7. Try printing in color.

If the issue persists, Install the printer using Windows built-in driver

Refer to this document to know how. Try printing.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi KUMAR0307

Thank you for your response and suggestion.  Unfortunately getting the ENVY5540 registered as a device with W10 is not the issue.  Although Initially it would not allow colour printing to be selected, I seem to have resolved that, but I am not absolutely sure how!

The problem I had was getting the HP recommended software for the ENVY5540 to install properly.  It all worked fine on my previous W7 laptop and if you looked in Programs and Features there were two entries, 1 - HP ENVY 5540 series Basic Device Software and 2 - HP ENVY 5540 series Help.  Then on the start menu you could select that software option to scan with the device etc.

When I transferred the device to my new W10 laptop, I logged on to the HP website to download the recommended software and drivers.  There was this same software available, perhaps with updated drivers?  However, when I installed this software, the installation process completed successfully without any errors and said installation complete at the end.  However, when you looked in program and features on this W10 laptop only the HP ENVY 5540 series Help was showing.  The basic software that was available on the W7 laptop was not showing or available on the W10 laptop.

Therefore with a bit of fiddling I have managed to get the HP Smart APP installed for all users on the W10 laptop and that allows scanning from the ENVY5540 to work.

Having said all that, why would the HP recommended software for this device not install, even though the installation  process told you that it had?

Hi Kumuar0307

I cannot seem to find the HP Envy 5540 printer assistant, but I am basically happy now that I can print and scan using the device albeit not using the HP specific software for that device.  I am happy to close this thread.  Many thanks for your help and suggestions.
