Hey @Offiong,
Welcome to HP Forums and Thanks for the post.
I understand that you are unable to update the firmware on your printer. Happy to help.
How is the printer connected to your computer? (USB or Wireless)
Recommend you to connect the printer to the computer using an USB cable.
Download the firmware for your printer from www.hp.com/drivers on your computer.
Once you have firmware update downloaded on the computer, connect the printer using a USB cable and run the firmware update.
This will resolve the issue you are facing.

The problem is that when the LCD displays Ready 2 Download, the printer is no longer recognized as a printer.
The firmware solutions mentioned assume that the printer is working and you can print to it.
We need a program that will recognize the printer (maybe by mac adress) and do the necessary handshaking to get the printer to accept the new firmware.
This needs to be done at the DOS level because otherwise a device driver is necessary. When the printer is in the Ready 2 Download state, it is not a printer and no driver can be loaded.
This needs to be addressed as there are hundreds (if not thousands) of customers with good hardware that
sudenly lost their firmware.
